If I want to try out experimental will my stable character be saved? I may want to switch back to stable.

Yep, experimental uses a separate hive to stable so your stable character will be unaffected.

Yup. Although note in experimental, character wipes are frequent, so don't be surprised to come back to experimental as a fresh spawn.
