It is set in the ArmA verse, zeds are infected people, not dead, and it was shortly after US involvement in Chernarus. This is all we know.

lot of fan theories just search for stuff about "green mountain" "radio transmissions". Basically because of the lack official backstory the players from mod days have filled it in. Its some pretty awesome stuff.
