zyryx 14 Posted July 16, 2014 So I logged into what I thought was a 7am server, started heading south east to Electro, hoping to find a god damn compass (you'll see why I desperately need one in a moment). I'm running and come across what I thought was a badly rendered seam. Ahead is grasslands and I figure I'm almost there and can risk it. Still running south east, nothing but grasslands, not a tree or bush in sight. OK I have been running for quite sometime now and haven't seen a damn thing. Shit, is the sun lower on the horizon? Shit, did I log into an evening server by mistake. The damn stars are coming out. OK about face 180 degrees and we're off and running again. Now I'm heading south east... server please don't reset. And then the server resets and I'm still in the middle of nowhere. Now I had planned at some point to make a run towards the edge of the map to see if it just kept going or if there was an invisbale wall. Answer: it just keeps going, so learn from my mistake fellow noobs. Question: What happens when I log back in? Will I still be in no man's land? Back at the edge of the map where I exited? Will I lose my gear and be spawned as a bambie? Question 2: What is that number in the upper right hand corner? Sometimes it's 100, sometimes it's 200? Wait to starve if you don't want to aimlessly run around. And it's not a badly rendered seam, its the end of the map, commonly refereed to as debug plains.Answer 2: Its your zeroing for your guns sights. sabre05 351 Posted July 16, 2014 Thanks You can change the zeroing of your guns by pressing Page up and Page down. It accounts for bullet drop up to x meters that you've zeroed to. (In case you didn't already know)
zyryx 14 Posted July 16, 2014 I was wondering about bullet drop in the game. Going to have to research that some time soon. I have found that most of my questions have no answers online, the wiki is almost useless. So far this forum rocks.
zyryx 14 Posted July 17, 2014 logged into a server at noon when the sun is high but to the south (the sun isn't directly overhead at noon). Was back in play space with 10 minutes!

Chroma 61 Posted July 28, 2014 You dont really need a compass ;)Clouds in Chenarus always travel from West to the East so you can work out North and South from that.Or if its night then you can navigate by the stars just Follow the two stars from Ursa Major to Ursa Minors tail and you'll find the north star (Polaris)People often think that the north star is the brightest star in the night sky (at least thats what we got told in school at around age 6 or 7) but that's actually Sirius and that tends to move seasonally so its fairly useless as a navigational aid.Once you learn landmarks and become familiar with the map, the compass is essentially useless (save for giving out target bearings to a squad) but if its not pristine then it will deviate from magnetic north by a variable margin.just find your direction focus on the horizon and run! Chroma 61 Posted July 28, 2014 Oh I didn't know the compass is wrong if it's not pristine! Is this true?I have no anecdotal evidence because if its less than pristine i just leave them.I'm just taking onboard a few threads on Reddit, these routinely crop up, but its hard to filter out genuine truth from complete morons. They crop up frequently enough for me to justify taking caution, i probably should harvest a few in different states and gauge them towards the north star, just to see if there really is a calibration difference! Its just a simple ranger compass so there's no declination setting to compensate for the variable difference between magnetic and true north (for instance there's a declination of +10degrees and 34mins East in Moscow or -3degrees 20mins West in Glasgow) i don't imagine this will matter in DayZ however as i doubt it takes longitude into account. Also if your running, pull up your inventory, right click your compass and click "inspect" it lets you see the direction your traveling without needing to equip it as normal.Useful if you're headed to a town or into a walker infested area and need to be weapons ready ;)
