Hi, does the condition of clothing (shirts, pants, etc.) affect how much damage I can absorb?

I dunno, but, I had a tactical vest with 2 pistols (an FNX and a .357) in it, I was engaged by a fellow with an SKS, he unloaded on me with his whole capacity.  The vest and the pistols were ruined and I wasn't knocked unconscience or even bleeding.  He then pulled a fire axe and hit my hunters ruck, ruined it and everything in it and again, I wasn't even bleeding (it had 4 protective cases in it).  I finally shot him with my SKS.
