Consuming food causes waste

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I thought it might add some more "realism" and possibilities to the game if used objects would produce some waste. Obviously, when I eat some canned food, it's going to leave an empty can. This for example could have serveal uses:

- Catch rain and drink water immeadiately, interesting for new players which don't have a bottle yet

- Usually people in DayZ don't close doors, so it's pretty easy to spot if places have been looted and maybe other players are nearby. Garbage could also tell that and leave a trace of the path the players used.

- Keep cans and throw them  to distract nearby zombies (I think that's already been suggested)

- Use cans for target practise

Just an idea what waste can be produced:

- empty food can

- empty soda can

- fruit peel

- packaging (tablets, bandage, etc)

Suggested before but I'm not sure about fruit peels, I like that.

It would be cool since you could track people who weren't being careful with their thrown away banana peels...

Not sure if this has been suggested but cans could be used for traps, place them behind a door so when it opens you hear it rattle. Or maybe you could tie them on some string between two objects as an alarm system in your base.

There would no doubt be litter everywhere too non player generated, I doubt before this apocalypse happened all of Chernaus went on a clean sweep. So there should be lots around urban areas for you to knock over and attract zombies/players.

Zombies especially, when stealth is possible we need somewhat natural traps to give us away like that.

It would be very cool.

(I feel this topic might get shot down since most has been suggested already so I'm adding more :P)

Yeah, I know about the can ideas, but this is more about waste in general, but I thought the cans might fit in well. I mean there are so manny things that produce waste, the cans are just one example and probably the cans are the most useful waste. Another examples would be the ammo paper boxes, empty matchbox, empty gas can, empty cereal boxes, empty rice bags, etc...

I remember dropping empty tin cans in the mod, and I guess at least this will come. Don't know how it affects performance though, guess that's the point why it isn't in yet.

I doubt it would cause any performance issues considering that it's a 1 for 1 item swap.  Right now you can drop your whole inventory on the ground without (much of) it disappearing into oblivion :)

But if a server was on for hours with 100 people eating cans of food and using other waste producing things it could become a problem.

However 64 bit servers might handle it just find guess we'll just have to wait and see.

i would like to see sound effects added for these so that they are also environmental hazards that can give your position away a bit like stepping on a twig. The cans could rattle in the wind or make a clash sound if you step on one. I know it is an advanced mechanic but i would love to see some development given to audio to help locate players and make movement more careful. Charging around everywhere should create louder steps and possibility of snapping twigs or clanging a can.

Yeah currently someone with a backpack full of loose ammo and other metallic objects can run up behind you with big hiking boots on and be silent until they're like 10m away.

I'm not sure they can make sound so complicated that you would hear the stuff in their backpack clanging together so environmental hazards like cans is a very great idea.
