How do I use the map? :p

I walked for miles and found a supermarket in a town somewhere (99% it's not a city, it's like a really really big village) it had a map in there, a G17 (I dropped my ww2 one for it was this wise? or is the ammo hard to find) with quite a lot of loot but I got scared and ran, too many zombies around it but I got into the woods and had a look around with my optics but couldn't see any name.

I did see a power station by the store, but I'm unable to find my location on the map. There's like 3 black crossed circles, what are these?

If you know of this place, (big village, store, power station and woods past some fields) is it populated? safe? (okay, "safer!")

There was a tent set up outside in the carpark, did someone set that up or can I take it? I couldnt see any to pick up and when I selected the tent it gave me the rearm option and save but no pick up.

oh my m1911 only had 2 clips with 2 rounds in it, the G17 had 11 rounds, still unsure I should have left it.

I don't know the location you are talking about but to use the map you just press "M" and find where you are or find a GPS to be shown on the map and the tent other players put down so you can go to it and loot any items in it and pack it up and take it if you want its good for holding loot just walk up to it and scroll over it and "pack up tent"

There was no pack up tent option, there was a couple items in it but worthless, and I know how to bring up the map but I wana know how I can see my location on it.

So I need a GPS item to find my location or what?

Yes, the only way to get an actual indication to your location on that map is if you have a GPS. Otherwise the only way is to make note of where you were when you spawned (should be some text in the lower right screen) and then guess-timate your direction and travel..

I got lucky and found some power plants/lines and was able to get my bearings. If you come across something distinctive, just pull up the map and try and find it (mouse wheel zoom in and out). Keep an eye out for road crossings, power lines, railways.. anything that might stand out to you on the map.

If you are on a "Recruit" level server, you will sometimes see an indicator on your map for where you are and which direction you are facing. Not only that, but if you can see yourself, sometimes other players will appear for short periods, these are the yellow coloured dots that are showen from time to time.

As for the tent.. I've never seen the pack up tent option, but I think you may need to empty it first for that to show up. Not sure, but it would make sense.

Finally, the m1911 is probably a better gun. It can one-hit zombies even in the chest, so no need to go for headshots, also ammo is fairly plentiful and you can even right-click on revolver ammo and repack it for the m1911. If you find another m1911, keep it! ;)

Zeleno ... quite safe ... but not exactly worth it. Good to get accustomed to everything. In the north there should be a pond where you can fill up water and even some cattle near the power station. Some deer stands in the south-west if i remember correctly, just follow the road.

If the coast is near, it might be Elektro ... in which case you should run for your puny life. :)

Hey ... i remember that server. It belongs to someone and migth despawn if he dies ... but you can not pack it together and move it somewhere else.

A nuisance. See: DayZ is built upon the Coop-Mode where can mark locations on the map and everyone will see them. Ignore them, and if you want to use them be aware that everyone may see them.

That is not true. You need just a map to find your rough location (+/- 50 meters).

Google "terrain association". There are plenty tutorials how to find yourself using landmarks, shape of terrain, literally everything that surrounds you.

If you have a compass you can use triangulation method to narrow your location to +/- 10 meters.

I've learned those fast on NAVEX course in my MilSim unit - very handy and you can find that useful in ArmA 2 and RL. It's easy and fun, but needs some practice ;)

I like this one. But it can be sooooo misleading.

Add a bearing of north and it will be much better.

Thank you so much for the advice! I forgot it tells you the location when you log in, though Im on a hardcore server (veteran is it? no third person or Xhairs)

Gutted I picked up the G17. I thought it was an automatic and rare and that the m1911 was a common gun :( Well, live and learn. I think I'm thinking of t he G18, what a dolt!

The g17 isn't bad. It can use a wide variety of ammo (g17, m9) and has more bullets per mag than every other sidearm (except the pdw). And it has a flashlight if that's any use to you. So, if you can always headshot Z it might be the best sidearm you can get.

you can also zoom (with numpad+/-)the fuck out of it. very easy to locate yourself with treelines streets and hills.

you will know the map better and better and it all becomes much easier.
