Melee Combat Mechanics

Recommended Posts

I think most of you will agree the melee combat in this game is a little boring and it takes too long.

I'm not complaining and I know it is being worked on and more things will come soon.

I don't know if any of you guys have played "State of Decay" I really enjoyed the melee fighting mechanics in that, like when the zombie is on it's knees you could smash it's skull with your knee to finish. And when you have beaten it to the floor you could do a well almost a golf swing to it's head to finish it off.

Now the golf swing finish would only work with baseball bats, golf clubs and poles / sticks for example. While axes could do something else like swinging the axe behind your head and burying it into the skull of the zombie. And so on for other weapons.

This is the sort of melee fighting I would like to see, would you guys like to see something similar?

Now the problem with comparing DayZ style melee with State of Decay, is that the engine used for DayZ was originally not designed for that. Any sort of finishers like you mention would require mechanisms that would lock two entities (you and the zombie/other player) in fixed, timed animations, and the game doesn't support that.

I'm perfectly sure it's "doable", but would also require a lot of effort.

My problem with melee is that it doesn't seem fluent. It's fairly inaccurate by modern melee game standards and feels just clunky. With a moderate practice you actually become quite proficient with most melee weapons in the game, but the feeling of overall "clunkyness" persists.

I would be perfectly satisfied with a melee system similar to Dark Messiah, if anyone still remembers how it works. I'm fairly convinced that system is way easier to achieve than the one from SoD.

Whatever, they need to do something with the melee combat. It's fucking awful as is.

Said it before: the game needs lock on mechanics.

Every drunk idiot can still land a punch to the body in real life... not in this game. Instead wild clunky and shaky fists that fly everywhere.

Also: add a option to grab someone from behind and choke or at least hold him.
