why not use opengl renderer and port to SteamOS

Recommended Posts

so the devs are making all this Little changes that in sum make a new engine from the old!

why bother with Windows and DirectX  if there is OpenGL and steamos! i could imagine this creating a huge buzz in the tech world, if they do steamos and OpenGL!

why are they so eager in DirectX! also steamos isnt as ressourcehungry as Windows!

can someone Point me into a direction/link or something where things get technical. i am a CAD specialist and do 3d visualisation of houses and 3dsmax Renderings .....

Probably because it's easier to upgrade from DX9 to 10/11 rather than go from DX to OGL. So from a business perspective, especially an alpha, it makes sense to me at least.

Its a neat idea, and I'd love for DayZ to be yet another game that doesn't require Windows to run.

But making the DayZ/Arma engine work with OpenGL as the renderer isn't something the people at BI have experience with. They've done an upgrade from DX9 to DX11 for Arma 3 when they were crafting that games engine so it seems like pretty much a no-brainer to just duplicate that process the best they can.

Is there an actual advantage to openGL over DirectX?

My year-old midrange desktop has no trouble running the game (or most others) on windows, so I don't see where resources are going to be a big issue...

Also, considering most people with a computer are running windows, wouldn't that make the most sense to develop for?
