Firework sound?

Everytime i get shot, i hear a very loud firework like sound. It's not a boom sound but it's a scream-ish sound. What is this?

The actual gunfiring sound comes later because sound is way slower than most projectiles.

Being shot at, you'll not only hear the rifle projecting the shot, but if it's close by you'll hear a whizz, bang, pop, snap, crack all sorts.
