This one is a shot in the dark, and honestly less interesting than my "Burying Backpacks" idea... but hear me out:

You travel along, and have the option to use your bread (that you can find on the ground) as a trail of breadcrumbs. Slowly, the bread depletes from your inventory and eventually is gone.

However, while it can be handy for navigation, it will also attract zombies...

Are you getting lost a lot? It's really not hard at all to find your way around the island after you have been playing for awhile...
