Realised I miss one of the mosted hated "feature"

Recommended Posts

I just realised while reminising of my times in vanilla nd the other mods in Arma II, that i find myself missing Side chat. Now im not talking about voice on side- I hated hearing peoples dogs, babies, and kids whining about being sniped in cherno as much as everyone else. But i DO miss being able to go into a server, scroll thru player list and start baiting the bigest clan on there into an all out blood feud.

Im a lazy sod, now i have to actually try to find them to start a fight rather then simply trash them in side untill they come get us :P

"so and so got nothing! You all suck! if you have any *insert profanity* come to devils castle and prove it".

Its amazing how many "pro" clans would come up there and file thru the door into a hailstrom of AKM fire one after the other to give me all dat epic loot xD

That's a dangerous game...I like it though. I saw a good idea that having a walkie could open up txt only side channel. I think that's a good way to have it, but make it fit into the game world better. Could still just have the ranged voice comms based on frequency, but for txt its server wide if you have a walkie :)

yeah its one of thse flood gate sort of issues tho. for everyone who uses it to stir up some clan PvP or original trolling thiers 10 other people spamming it and whining about admins, spawns, KoS, etc.

Well, thats what you have a walkie talkie for.... Though I seem to be the only one that switches it on...

I remember in the mod we could mute players....if I remember right that muted there side chat voice....but not txt. Now if they made both mutable, we could stop the trolls, by leaving them to troll themselves.....counter trolling lol :)

God I loved sidechat.

The walkie is just not an effective means for it at this point in time. A limited voice range is fine, but like others have said a server wide text chat would go a long way.

Genuine trolling and flame wars were so interesting to read while hunting for camps. Or reading 2 clans trash talking each other over it.

Good times. It was also effective at gettin' help if you needed it, and everyone in the general vicinity to hunt you down.

Side chat was fun is all im sayin'

yeah i guess to some extent thats why it "worked". the clan you started calling out couldnt do anything to shut you up other then come to you campy spot to prove a point- which 9 times out of 10 resulted in zero effort PvP and epic loot for us.

on one occasion howver they brought satchels and leveld the entire castle with us in it all the while playing "who let the dogs out" in direct as they set the satchels and ran away lol. i couldnt even be mad. epic counter-trolling was epic.

That's how i felt about it. as long as it was text only its not disruptive to gameplay for those who dont care at all. Sadly i feel that we will never see it in any form in SA as it would kinda go against the hardcore realism that the devs are going for (being able to instantly broadcast messages to everyone in the countryside in the midst of the apocalypse)

Only thing i'm really not concerned with authenticity about. Side-chat made a server feel alive and have a sort of community. I've actually made friends over side chat and grouped up. Now, if I did want to make new friend I have to meet them in person first, and that always ends in a shoot out because we didn't get to communicate first and get a feel for the kind of person they were.

Like I had a dude pick me up in a plane, he landed it just outside electro. I shot him as soon as he got out and took it. Of course he bitched over side chat, but EVERYONE on the server laughed their ass off about it and it solidified my reputation on the server.

Yup. to an extent i meant that you really learned who the regulars were. big servers developed a certain community. EG. you would generally know certain groups as PVPers/KOS, others might be RP crews or Medics, etc. the vanilla server i our clan was on saw our rivals run regular party bus routes in an attempt to gain public favor xD Literally going around picking up people in a bus with music blaring on direct lol.

Right now, there is absolutely no way to foster a community right now. I understand they want some anonymity but that just gives all the power to the arsehats. We need something to help develop a sense of community, even a little bit.

If theres one thing the internet teaches us, its that everyone's inner asshole is released when they get to be compleetly annonymous.

I am all for the side chat, text only, if you have a walkie talkie and battery installed. This would put the choice in the hands of the individual. If you want side chat, get a walkie talkie. If you don't, no one is forcing you to use it.

You guys seem to be using side chat more for evil....some of used it for good. I was the guy offering air taxi for people, always eventually getting backstabbed for my heli lol

That's what made tents so great aswell, I could stash all my gear, take nothing but a macrov for zombie defence then set out to be a hero, informing everyone over side that alls I had was a macrov so theres not much point shooting me for gear :)

The community thing is so true aswell. On our private hive groups gained a reputation, some made pacts and stuff, others would broadast to new spawns they would happily hunt any bandits if given a location....like someone else said it made it feel more "alive".

We just need a way to introduce it so it cant be used for trolling, and fits into the game. IE a walkie to be able to use it....or have walkies function as the do now, then add a mobile phone or satellite phone that grants access to sidechat....gotta be a lore friendly way to have it :)

We should spawn with a radio in the place of the flashlight.

The radio should work as a side chat with global coverage.

As a lone wolf player, I miss text side chat as a way to spy on other players.  It gave you a general idea of what was going on the map. Where to go for action, or to avoid it. It could also be used to spread wrong information or bait players.

Oh, I could be trusted. The guy was going around the map picking up freshspawns with promises to go to the Airfield, he would land and make them get out then have his buddy kill them for lulz.

I acted as a fresh spawn and killed him much to the enjoyment of the regulars on the server while he whined on side chat.

I did as I pleased. I could be trusted most of the time, it just depended if I liked the persons attitude and if they were a regular on the server.

I was a pretty common site alongside the other regulars on the server. A lot of them I never actually met, but we chatted and shot the shit.

If I ended up killin' someone who I was cool with, I would return their gear.

For the reasons OP stated, sidechat was good, and tactically interesting.

But the cons definitely outweigh the pros, I didn't like seeing the flame wars, whinging, "anyone in cherno?", "GET SOME SKILL DMR" etc on a loop, it was a tedious blue wall of shite.

Walkies would be better if they made them text aswell as voice based, and silent if held in the hands of the player.

Using walkies as a replacement for sidechat means you have to maintain your character to communicate with other people on the server, not just have telepathy off the boat. Which is pretty cool, that being said they should be far more common, a couple in every police station, police cars, military buildings etc, and maybe we'll get more people using them.

If the devs won't put 'Side-Chat' back into the game then the modders will. Its as simple as that.

The game, imo needs side-chat to make a return. Especially when Private Hives are introduced as a way of establishing a community within the server.

Sidechat was toxic, and that's all it ever was. 70% whining about getting killed, 20% whining about not getting a ride to NWAF, 5% trolling, and 5% actually doing things constructively. Was like having a bright neon blue 4chan feed grafted to my eyeballs while playing DayZ.

I am so god damn glad it's gone, never look back BIS... never look back. In-fact, I would support you somehow ripping the code for sidechat/global chat altogether, make it impossible. Cut the hard line! If it were a server option, then servers without it would be dead, because people are imbeciles and don't recognize the detriments.

Absolutely no reason, from both a gameplay and "realism" perspective, why the player should get INSTANT and CONSEQUENCE-LESS access to a means of global communication. You've already got your silly TS for that if you need it.

The only way I'd EVER, EVER, want it to return... is if they made text chat an ability through walkie talkies (not sure if this is the case currently, I haven't picked up a walkie ever). And even then, it should have a finite range.

And it wasn't a hated feature, masses of people adored/adore sidechat. But just like McDonalds and Justin Bieber, something being popular doesn't mean it's good.

it would be nice for side chat. But id like it if it was typing only and you couldnt talk over side chat with a mic, just type. Would be cool if you found the walkie talkie that you would then enable side chat, then who ever had the talkies could type...like texting lol. I do want that back in a way. but i dont want it to where you can talk. I hate hearing talking since for a second i think its someone close to me talking in direct chat.lol, scares the shit out of me for a sec lol

I understand why they wouldnt put it in since i dont think you could communicate with people without using a walkie talkie and the other player having them too. But running solo gets boring and side chat and typing makes it a little better. If your the type of person who likes using it, or if you dont want it you could disable it.

I do miss creepy music and side chat...to at least say whats up to people without having to find them, but i understand if it doesnt get in game...at least on some servers on the mod and typing gave a little more life to the game socially...and thats what i feel it lacks atm, and also you can build up a relation on the server your on, so the regulars know whos is cool and who is a douche

i guess it has its pros and cons

it would be also nice to have some radiostation, and you have to stand like 5 meters away from the micro and you can use the sidechat then
