650m and 1680x1050... not playing nice

Recommended Posts

I got the DayZ standalone a couple of days ago, and I've been playing it on my Alienware M14xR2 (650m 2GB DDR5, 16GB DDR3, i7 3740QM 3.7GHz 6MB cache) on it's 1600x900 screen, and I got good frames at mostly low, and the game looked nice. I get home from my vacation and hook it up to my monitor and mouse and keyboard setup like usual, boot up the game, and have issues. The frames are crap at 1680x1050 (the monitor's resolution), and when I set the interface to Large (the only one that fills the screen) and 16:10 aspect ratio (the AR of the monitor), I've got half of the HUD and menus cut off like zoom on a crappy, cheap flatscreen. I don't know what to do... I've had to set it to 16:9 which looks horrible to see it all.

Just saying this now, don't criticize Alienware. I like it, if you don't, keep that to yourself. It's what I wanted. I wanted a cool-looking laptop with flashy lights; it doesn't mean that's your cup of tea. I almost feel criminal saying Alienware online.. I shouldn't have to even say this, actually.

But, anyway, does anybody have any recommended settings and a way to fix the aspect ratio? Yes, I know it's in alpha, but this pretty much ruins the game for me. :/ Should I disable my second monitor while playing, or even put it in Windows Basic mode (which I'm about to try)?

Thanks,

Gavin

Do you mean your framerate is much worse at 1680x1050? I didn't get that part. Also, don't worry about your laptop being an Alienware. In the end it's the specs that matter and not the brand. Any tech person talking down someone else's system brand, disregarding the actual question is a fake and shouldn't bother responding imho.

Wish I could actually help you but I know next to nothing about the SA graphic settings. If I understand you correctly, you say that once you go 16:10 on your external monitor the HUD is messed up right? And only when you change it to 16:9 AR (which isn't your native AR) the HUD is fixed?

Yep, my framerate does plummet at that resolution, and the HUD is messed up when I switch to my native resolution. The whole game goes into 16:9; I wouldn't mind if it was just the menus, but it's sad to see that a popular aspect ratio is left in the dust (at least on 1050p). I could attempt lowering my game's interface resolution to a smaller 16:10 res', and upscale the 3D resolution to 1680x1050 like my monitor is worth natively - it's worth a shot until this is fixed, right? I don't want to have to use this solution forever, as then the interface would look out of whack, and the game might even possibly downscale the 1050p res to the smaller interface resolution and just use the supersampling as kind of an anti-aliasing effect... I'll write back if it works, though.

And, about the Alienware thing, I agree; I just didn't want to see replies flooded with my choice of system... there used to be server-wide fights on the Just Cause 2 Multiplayer beta test server... one of the biggest servers has actually banned  the word "Alienware!"

Thanks,

Gavin

Wow, that Just Cause story is just sad..

Hope you have some luck fiddling around with the options. Maybe tomorrow I could try installing the SA on my old gaming laptop, which has a 1680x1050 resolution. I will install and launch it for the first time on an external 16:9 (main) monitor so that the game is first played in a 16:9 AR (like in your situation) and then switch over to my laptop 16:10 screen (so playing without an external monitor) to see if I get the same problems you described. Just something I can try if you can't fix the problem.. maybe then I can somehow find a solution :/

Maybe it's helpful if we can get some screenshots to work with?

Thanks for offering to go through all that trouble! :)

I'll take a screenshot when I get in-game, every server I get makes me wait 200 seconds to spawn... UGH (and I crap myself thinking that it's reset my character, LOL), I'm waiting as we speak.

Thanks again,

Gavin

Okay, I did what I told you. This is what my game looks like at 1680x1050 with HUD set to large. I think it looks fine? All in proportion and no weird HUD issues like you described.

I wonder, perhaps you forgot to set your HUD resolution to 1680x1050 as well? The HUD resolution has to match your video resolution. Like this:

Huh... no, they're both at 1680x1050. I might try reinstalling the game at some point or deleting a config file, hopefully that'll reset it and fix it.

Thanks,

Gavin

P.S. If you'd ever like to play some DayZ with me, I'm Gaveroid on Steam. :P

Yep! :D I reset my config file, and it worked perfectly; the aspect ratio is fixed. Thanks much!
