DayZ Background Story

I've not seen anything about a background story, like, how it all happened, and why you spawn on the coast, just saw a thread where the game is based on the coastal spawns, so there must be a story somewhere about it all? Or did the developers just make the game this way?

I'm not certain, and I could be wrong, but I think they said they intentionally left it vague, so that the player base could say why it happened. It's not like we can verify how it happened in the game, there isn't a doctor that watched patient 0 on the map, and there isn't internet to look at.
