If you clear a place out legitimately, that is pick everything up and drop it elsewhere it ranges from 15-30 minutes. If you server hop into a building, loot despawns, and respawns couple minutes later, unless someone else was there before you, then the loot they left behind is stays.

It is safer to pick up everything, drop it elsewhere and wait for it to respawn than server hop. Server hopping is lame anyways. Besides if you clear the trash, you more than likely will get to kill a hopper or two with some nice loot on them.

sounds like you wanna cheat...

What. I don't even...

Yeah, that's a bit of a stretch. I hang out in the region surround Zelenogorosk and I make "the rounds" to those dearstands and stores in the area regularly. It's a bit aggravating when the town has absolute crap for loot and I go walking around and make my way back only to find the same loot still there. I'm glad someone asked this question, because I was wondering the same thing.

well obviously this is not the way you're 'supposed' to play the game. it's an exploit

paranoia?

I stand by what I said. it is an exploit, just like server hopping

it is an exploit if you literately go somewhere and do these constantly and never explore the rest of the map however if the loot didn't respawn in such a way then it would be such a pain to try and get ammo for guns or food or water + there is always the chance while you're waiting for the loot to respawn a player shoots you in the back

I agree, and I understand why the loot respawns

I thought I read somewhere, maybe in an update note, I'm not sure, that it was nonspecific or hidden. From what I understand, loot and zombie spawns are tied to the player actually being nearby. Zombies/loot exist for some hidden arbitrary number of minutes after no players are present.

Then when someone new comes along, a new set of loot/zombies pops.

15-30 minutes is a bit of a stretch rofl, I've had loot respawn one room over 30 seconds after I've looted it, all depends on how well the server is running.

yeah, but I guess that would get more complicated when there's more than one player in the area

Do you also consider offline maps an exploit? Loot chance tables? Chance and conditions for getting an infection?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to understand the mechanics of the game you're playing. It's what makes people good at them.

It sounds like you want to handicap yourself to preserve some sense of mystery of something.

Anyway, someone who knows more about scripting than me should pop open the .pbos and answer this for us.

After picking everything up and moving it, will loot spawn if you are sitting within a certain radius of the spawn locations, or does it require a proximity before it will spawn?

Also while on the subject of loot spawning, will a crashed heli respawn loot, or are they a once off until the heli crash site itself disappears and respawns elsewhere on the map? When do heli crash sites spawn/despawn (server restarts I'd imagine)?

I wouldn't call offline maps an "exploit", but IMO it is a form of "cheating". that being said, I use an offline map, but I don't lie to myself about what I'm doing

clearing out all the items, dumping them on the ground outside, and waiting for them to respawn just seems like a little much. do whatever you want, but that's just how I feel about it

Nah, I wouldn't so much consider it cheating. Consider this (hypothetically), this actually happens, this is where you are from, then wouldn't you (in general) have a sense of which town is which, what direction (in general) to go to get somewhere specific (ie. an airfield or deer stand)? Sure you would! But this isn't my town, I don't know which way what is. I am starting to get a feel for it though and not needing my map so much. So no, IMO having a printed map is not an exploit or cheating, just handy to give you an idea of where to go.

Ever considered that the spawn time might be interesting for legit survivers, too? I'd like to know it because every time i join back into the game all surrounding buildings are empty... I guess it's some kind of serverhopping countermeasure, which is good.

But i am no serverhopper! I just log in the next day and would like to find some loot. Right now I'm at an empty gas station... and i'm desperate for a jerry can! The next gas station is usually pretty far away... so it would be very handy to know how long i had to wait to find loot at this one.

Edit: Before writing this Post i ran away until the gas station disappeared behind a small hill and trees. Afterwards i ran back and TADA: New Zombies and a JERRY CAN (YAY!)

So with the right distance it should be below 10Min.
