Zombie Spawns

Anyone know the basics/basis on how this works? Here is why I would like to know.

Was playing on our server during the night time. Only 3 of us online. 41/48 zombies. 2 of us have the dinner bell (Lee) and revolvers, the other has shotgun. We draw aggro in Elecktro. Enter house. Start unloading.

Me 78 zombie kills, player 2 = 56 zombie kills, player 3 = 53 zombie kills, after we run out of ammo decide to run out of the house and just simply ditch the zombies. As we run out can see busload zombies outside still. We zig, zag and ditch them. But now out of ammo and bandages. Resupplied fine but seriously? When the hell do the zombies stop spawning? Or what determines when and how many spawn?
