My weapon will not fire. Please help

So after a couple hours of searching houses I finally found a .45 revolver and I just so happened to have 3 things of ammo. Well a zombie started chasing me and I tried to fire but the gun wouldn't shoot I just kept throwing chem lights for some reason. I also tried CTRL+left clicking but that didn't work either. Is there something I'm doing wrong or not doing?

hit F until your gun mag quantity appears in the top left :) F cycles through stuff in your inventory that you can throw, Flares, chemlights, empty cans and bottles.

there's a tutorial/boot camp type mission in the single player options somewhere, it's definitely handy to play through it.
