Gman (DayZ) 9 Posted June 25, 2012 What i mean by MMO styled servers(Because i don't know the name for them) is each player from the start of the game has to pick a server. He/she plays solely on that server for that character. Can create multiple characters across multiple servers, but only one character per server(For DayZ).I know at the moment this would not be possible, nor would rocket have the funds to do such a thing, but its just an idea for when DayZ is a stand alone game. Pros to MMO-Styled servers:-No server hoppers-No loot farmers.-Multiple characters then possible.-Larger player count per server(This has already been suggested by Rocket).-Players can form relationships with the people on their server, and not lose people that enjoyed playing with.-No admins abusing power.-Easier for friends to get together and stay together.-Clans of players could form rivalries and have awesome territory battles.-Better server stability.(?)-Possibly a way for Rocket to make money(charge for server transfers).Cons to MMO-Styled servers:-If full, many people would not be able to join(would have to find a solution to this one).-Expert vs Novice level servers. How would you be able to change while keeping on one server.-Would probably be a monthly cost to play the game. There are probably a lot more cons to this, so add to the list if you can.Another possibility would be that for each character you create, that character is locked to one server until you die, which you could then stay on that server or switch to another one(which would null out the pro for rocket to make money off transfers).Let me know what you guys think, would this be a good idea for the stand alone DayZ? Or, would it even work this this style of game?
mbainrot 4 Posted June 25, 2012 I don't really like the idea, not how the game is structured at the moment.Main issues I see is that it means servers would have to be permanently setup. if the server you reside on is decommissioned what happens? or if the network hosts network goes down? You can't just hop to another server. Also the design would mean that dayzmod would have to run their own servers. In the typical business model of starting small and growing up big, it would mean that one region (Rocket's regional area or one of low enough ping) would have all the servers and then slowly propagate out to areas as the org grows. I reckon maybe a server change timer would be a better solution to the first 2 problems. To fix admins abusing power... add a forum or a ticket system to report their hosts. Have a 3 strike system to boot. 3 strikes and server is black listed. Let alone the fact that the public listing would hurt the networks who allow abusive admins to abuse their powers.Friends can get together by use of steam, vent, teamspeak, etc. Another idea for that one would be to have an in game friend system or maybe integrate with forums etc?It would be easier for people to stay together... but not by choice.I don't really think it would work for this game, and I think one of the core ideas of the game is that you can change servers to be with friends on another server, you can move your group to a safer server if someone decides to rape spawners or camp the daylights out of a area you want to go to but don't have the fire power to breach.Thats just my two cents :)
andersand42@hotmail.com 0 Posted June 25, 2012 Should anyway be a non-exploitable way to have several characters. So you can play with friends on one and have another that you play one your own with. This basically means that you can't have two characters on the same server.
duddbudda 33 Posted June 25, 2012 Pros to MMO-Styled servers:-No server hoppers true-No loot farmers false - loot farming means sitting on one server and moving loot so it respawns-Multiple characters then possible what's stopping multiple characters now?-Larger player count per server(This has already been suggested by Rocket) evidence please' date=' also, not necessarily a pro[/b']-Players can form relationships with the people on their server, and not lose people that enjoyed playing with already perfectly possible-No admins abusing power stop playing on servers run by faggots, report them and get them banned-Easier for friends to get together and stay together lie, we regularly squeeze nearly a dozen chaps onto the same server-Clans of players could form rivalries and have awesome territory battles already happens-Better server stability.(?) evidence-Possibly a way for Rocket to make money(charge for server transfers).I want DayZ's devs to make money, but I'm not going to stand for some manipulative runtweasel of an accountant charging $10 to copy a couple megs about, shit, Hive is currently bouncing player data around hundreds of servers without costing us money, why on earth would you think this is a good thing?Cons to MMO-Styled servers:-If full, many people would not be able to join(would have to find a solution to this one) for such meagre positivies why would we accept such a brutal cost? because blizzard do it?-Expert vs Novice level servers. How would you be able to change while keeping on one server wildly heavy handed solution-Would probably be a monthly cost to play the game I said it before and I say it again: Blizzard got you trudging in they traces - DayZ runs 300 and some servers right now but we ain't getting chargedto be clear: I play only on one server as it is, I just don't see why we need to remove the choice
Vultcha 0 Posted June 25, 2012 this would be great, but instead of having different "characters," all your character's inventory, position and status would be stored by each individual server.in that way i could "play out" on a single server, and if i want to go to a different server, it's the same name and look, but i gotta start over again.
