surely this can't be right? I know I've been alive since last December but why so much bandwidth?

I believe that's because the messaging system that they're using between your client and the server is incredibly inefficient.  The dev's know about it and are working on a guaranteed messaging system that should bring that down as well as fix some of the desync issues some people are having.

I've 0 desync there, but i'm using 10 x the bandwidth as anyone else on the server.
