Sudden Explosion

I was playing epoch the other day and had built my base in a barn, and I parked my car in there. Two zombies managed to get inside and I began to kill them with my axe. All of a sudden I missed the zombie and hit my car, 1 time. Just 1 Time and it exploded. The car was on full health, everything was green. I lost all of my currency and weapons. 

 

This has never happened to me before and I have never heard of it. Do cars normally do that with just one hit of an axe? I had 2 jerry cans in there. Could that have contributed to the explosion?
