Offline players online NPC's

Recommended Posts

OK so one more idea I thought of:

A while ago I played Age of Wushu, a F2PMMORPG. In this game they made it possible that Offline players were still "Online", but as NPC's. In Age of Wushu you were supposed to, for example, kidnap those people. But, I thought, if it is possible to implement that same idea into DayZ, the offline players could become survivors that you can save, or turn into cool animations where they're getting ripped apart and eaten by zombies.

And, if my other idea of caves/bases would be possible (see topic "just some ideas #7" http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/180272-just-some-ideas/ ) than the offline players could become NPC defenders of the base while they're away! :D
Don't know if that's the idea of the game, but thought it was a pretty cool feature in the other game and I think it'd be absolutely awesome in DayZ!! :D

Cheers!

Dean already says he wants no NPC's in game. Ever.

Wouldn't work anyway, infantry AI within the engine (as it follows the Arma 3 make-up) is utter shit, they'd either be sniping you with pistols from outside visual range (50% difficulty applied to AI or higher) or have the intelligence associated to an unborn foetus (49% or lower).

Plus I don't like the idea of a computer masquerading as me when I'm not in control... Who knows what else it's doing when I'm not watching.

NPC's aren't any fun anyways.

You: "hey, are you friendly?"

NPC: "I'M AT GRID 037093!"

Asoix: Shame to hear that.
Fox Damocles: Your character wouldn't do anything that'd influence your playing at any time. It's completely separate. Your character (name) would just be online. In AoW it'd say your name + NPC, here you could be, for example, wearing a red or blue band around your arm telling ppl you're an NPC.

Mullrough: NPC's wouldn't be able to talk, they could just be there for the animation :) Maybe you can't save them, they always die, but it'd be pretty awesome to see a group of zombies munching off another (dead) player :P

No thank you. Only makes me scared to AFK-- "oh fuck, my bot decided to walk off a cliff"/"my bot wasted all my ammo shooting at a berry bush"

I kinda see what you're getting at, but I think it would cause too many problems.

What came to mind as I read it is what will happen if "Player" gets into a fight with "Bot", gunfight lasts a little while and the "Player" has a hard time killing him for what ever reason and he expels a fair amount of ammo. At this stage of the battle I log in. My "Bot" disappears to allow me to materialize where my login point is and the "Player" is left with his/her arse left out in the breeze because he/she hasn't got anything left to defend themselves with and no vanquished "Bot" corpse to loot for their efforts, so they can replenish their stocks.

If there was a way around that one issue alone, then I could see the benefit. But every way I can personally think of to make up for the the possibility of disappearing Bots just leads to other possible issues.

Also, while having a tag like + NPC might help with differentiating between Players and non-Players,  how many are actually going to notice and not come on here bitching about combat logging players ALL THE FREAKING TIME lol. I know common sense would dictate that they knew what they were fighting, but considering that people still sign up here to bitch about SA being an incomplete game and full of bugs that shouldn't be there (even though in Alpha you'd expect it), I'm far from hopeful that common sense actually exists amongst most people anymore :P.

I like this only because if they were anything like A2 bots they'd become Death incarnate.

Seriously, A2 AI are fucking omniscient super-marksmen.

As many of you would dissagree with me,

if sleep ever gets implemented,i would love for my charachter to stay behind asleep in an NPC form.

But walking/talking NPCs is a big no from me.
