Loose gear on server reset/restart?

Recommended Posts

I am new to the game and have a question. I notice servers that have 2 hour and 4 hour resets/restarts whatever. If I were playing on one of those servers when it resets, would I respawn naked and cold on the beach when it comes back up? Would I loose my gear?

This actually leads me to another question...

If I log out for the night, am I still bound to the last server I joined and therefore subject to resets of that server while I am not playing?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Hello Okeebc,

Your character will not reset when a server is restarted. All the characters are stored in the "hive", which is why you can have the same character on ALL servers. So basically you can join other servers (bc yours is down atm) and keep playing.

Above explains 2nd question as well.

Makes good sense! I wasnt sure so any time I joined a 2hr or 4hr no notice server I have been more paranoid than usual  :P

Thanks for the info!  :beans:

Well you arn't supposed to lose your gear on server restart but sometimes when you have gear and join a server you will spawn at the beach with no gear. This is a bug, and to avoid it you have to don't press any keys and don't move the mice and hit esc, and find a new server.  :)

I'll try to clear this up for you to the best of my abilities.

Basically, your character is stored by DayZ and Steam, so you don't need to worry about your character being server-based at all. Secondly, since this game is still in Alpha, it is possible that your character could be wiped (Lose all his stuff and respawn). Lastly, servers are basically just a place to store loot and for players to pick up that loot. Servers serve no other purpose than that.

I hope this somewhat clears it up for you, if you have any more questions feel free to message me (to do that, click my profile picture and go to my profile, you should find something that says something along the lines of "Private message" or something like that.) Cheers!

just be a little careful with joining "any" server, as not all are setup properly.

you can wipe your character accidentally.

stick to true official similarly named servers:

vilayer, gameservers, fragnet, mpgs, etc

Also, something that's not been mentioned yet is Regular vs Hardcore. These have separate hives so your Regular character won't ever be available on a Hardcore server and visa verse. You can switch between Regular and Hardcore without losing the character you are switching from, so you could play Regular with one character, switch to Hardcore and play with another character, then switch back to Regular and play with the first character again (assuming they've not been killed - note that there is a 30s logout timer whereby your avatar stays in game for 30s and can be killed, whilst you only see menus. It's also possible to log back into a server you have just left and kill yourself). Check what server type you're logging in to prior to logging in.

The only difference between Regular and Hardcore at the moment is that Hardcore has forced first-person perspective, whilst Regular is switchable to third person and back. I would expect that Hardcore will have other differences later on in the development, but for now it's just the view.

Also also, don't forget the #1 rule of DayZ: Don't get attached to your shit, you will lose it at some point.

Thanks for all of the info everyone.

I ran into the regular-hardcore differences in my first few days of playing and of course I freaked out when I changed servers for the first time.

Haha, I remember when I had that happen, I actually think I made a post about it on the forums sometime ^^...
