New sounds, anyone?

Recommended Posts

The devs said that they have hired a new sound designed or whatever a long while ago already. So far only new sounds are for footsteps. C'mon, we need new sounds instead of the boring ArmA 2 sounds. Even a new forest or sea ambience sound would be great.

Something like this:

Thoughts?

My guess is that they are waiting till most, if not all the new sounds are done to put them in. I may be wrong though since the exp branch has a new sound for opening soda can, and it sounds horrible if you ask me.

I'd love to have some door opening/closing sounds. I always shut doors behind me, so it'd be nice to get some advanced warning if someone were to come into my building.

That thread with the videos is great.

The sounds are place holder. I predict a patch notes containing "All new sounds" in it and we will open it up and bask in the glory of the new sound designers.

I believe that a lot of the current sounds are placeholders. I would like a door opening/closing sound though. :)

Yeah, I too believe that sounds are placeholders, as the motto of an alpha says, "Everything is subject to change".

I'm aware that they're placeholders. But there has been alot of new branches and none of them had any sound updates >.>

Hm, there are some more sounds that have changed, some of them only in the experimental so far. But you are right, it´s way too less for that amount of time. I guess an interested soundnovice could do that few recordings + editing waaaaay faster ( i´m trying to avoid to say in a few hours). But of course i don´t know what´s going on behind the curtains.

Anyway, my first priority would be to sort out the flaws of the sound engine instead of just replacing samples. Good gamesound is very important for me because it helps to fight the environment and other players with good positional audio and also produces atmosphere and atmosfear.

Randomly missing gun sounds and bad perception for direction and distance is surely not what we want in a game like Dayz. Not to mention the funny munching and zombie-quaking sound fragments. And i want to hear someone running to me earlier than at the last 2 meters.

I know it´s alpha and also that the devs are aware about this. But i really like to see better/correct sound in less than one or two years :-)

I'm just glad female characters don't make male breathing noises and say "fuck, that hurts" in a weird German accent any more.

Now it's just a strange 'UHHHHHN' whenever you are injured

I agree with this completely, right now there doesn't seem to be any dynamics to the sounds(not sure if I'm using the right term). But anyways, right now when you hear a sound it will not hold the direction it comes from if you turn. This is mostly noticeable with thunder.

"will not hold the direction it comes from if you turn. This is mostly noticeable with thunder."

I guess we can´t have everything and something like this may be a problem with how sound nowadays works in windows (XAudio 2 ?). And this is only really noticeable at samples with a long duration. Like i said, nowadays. I can´t remember such things at times where we had hardware accelerated audio (Creative, EAX, OpenAL.....)

Oh, when i remember games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl and it´s successors with it´s fantastic atmospheric and precise positional soundscape (on Creative X-FI, OpenAL+EAX ), or UT2K4 where you could nearly spread headshots without monitor due to the precise pos. audio.

I really want to turn back the time :(

The current sound design in the game is decent. I think at this point in the process, the developers are more interested in directing their efforts towards implementing the more essential game-play components. Sound is probably one of the last things they'll touch.

Umm... they have tweaked the sounds in every patch. Also, sounds are one of the most important things in the game.

It really doesn't seem like it sometimes, that's me putting it nicely.

Which one do you mean? They've tweaked sounds or sounds are important?

Them tweaking sounds with every patch. Memorable ones for me including the infinite reloading Mosin sound, the deafening white noise revolver sound, the punch-swishing noise that carries on 10 times when you stop punching, hearing zombies almost 100% of the time everywhere I go currently on experimental? Oh, yeah the bugs, my personal favorite, hear someone eat and reload his weapons all the time. They have made some sounds much better and enjoyable to your ear, soda cans actually sound like soda cans, and firing a mosin sound really good. But what I meant was that the are working on the sounds all the time, and sounds are NOT the last thing they're fixing, I think it should be one of their top priorities. I really dislike it when I keep hearing random sounds that shouldn't be there.

But back to the topic, did you hear the ambient sounds? Amazing.

POTTENI,

decent? Really? Ok, everyone has it´s preferences........ When i was younger it was all about graphics quality like probably most of you and it took time until i discovered how much good sound can add to the immersion of a game. Now if you ask me to turn down graphics or sound, i would turn down graphics, no doubt. Of course both should be good!

Well, most of you are just looking at nice graphics on a decent monitor and will never bother with soundcards, real hifi headphones, HRTF and whatever. Instead you are sticking to onboard audio, crappy PC-speakers or headsets, wrong setups and lack of knowledge what you are missing.

And yes, even your expensive Steel series 7.1 or whatever headset isn´t worth 5 Euro when it comes to sound quality.

Actually i don´t want to convince anyone! You have to discover it by yourself, apart from that it is useless.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I understand the importance of good sound design. Sound is more important than visuals in terms of immersion. That being said, given the game's current state, I still think the sound is decent. Its hardly immersive, but it serves its purpose.
