playing on second computer, character is gone.

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody!

I have an issue here. Back at my place, I play standalone on my rig with steam, all normal. I'm away from home visiting the family at the moment and i installed DayZ SA with my steam account on my mothers' computer.

My character is not there when i start the game, and my mother's name was on the loading screen... wtf?

she doesn't play DayZ and i'm connected to MY steam account

Anybody have any idea what to do? I thought that my profile was basically attached to my steam account but it turns out not.

How do i get my character with my gear on this pc?

Thanks for your answers!  :)

Most Arma based games take the Windows User Account's name as the main profile name as to getting your character on that computer, I don't really know. I thought characters were connected to the hive.

Dayz character information is not stored on a cloud. I reccomemd moving your DayZ profiles into their respective places on your new PC, via flash drive.

I thought your character was saved to the hive you were playing on (ie regular, hardcore, etc...). When I recently changed computers, all I had to do was install steam and download DayZ again. It did change me back to my windows user name as GafMast said, but that's a quick fix. It also made my character look like a fresh spawn on the login screen as the client on my new machine had never been connected to any hive yet. As soon as I logged in, my fully geared character was there. The only thing that you have to copy over is your video settings, as that's stored in the config files on your local machine.

I haven't found an authoritative source on this yet, but will append it if I do. If someone else finds one, let us know. This is a good question.

EDIT:

I found a couple of threads on this that confirm that your character is saved to the hive not your local computer - I'd call that the cloud, but it may just be semantics.  I haven't found anything from a developer, so I wouldn't call it authoritative, but a lot of people are seeing the behavior I described.

One more note:  your key bindings files are also saved on your local computer, so if you changed those at all, you'd need to migrate it to your second computer.

OP (Speaker) - let us know what happened when you logged on to a server.  Was everything still there?

Hey peeps! Everything turned out fine in the end. I was creating a new character, set the name to Speaker, logged in and "poof" all my gear and my original character was there.

My keys had to be set and the graphics tweeked. My favorite servers were not recorded unfortunately.

All in all, things went better than i initially feared.

Thanks again for all your responses, we've made progress in the land of DayZ!
