I was all set and after logging back in to go have some fun I realized I needed to drink ...fast!  I passed out trying to find water ....QUESTION: Could I have gone back after re-spawning and found my scope? Would I need to wait until dead?  Thanks ahead of time and yes I'm an idiot for not monitoring my health!

You have about 10 minutes after you die to get your stuff.  As long as someone else doesn't get there first.

 

As you said, pay more attention to health/hunger/thirst.  Sucks to lose gear just over that.

Yeah you can go back to your body if you can find it before it despawns...I think or that'd suck....hopefully no one will loot you

You get plenty of warnings like "I'm starving" and "I'm extremely thirsty" before this happens though.
