cant play on same pc with different accounts

so me and my brother share a pc, and could normally play fine separately, but my brother returned recently to playing after being off for a while, and when he signs into his account and runs the game, he is my character, instead of his own.  it worked fine before though.

we both have separate steam accounts, and both purchased the alpha on our account

This may sound stupid, but is he actually logging you out and logging into his steam account when playing?
