I was thinking something similar.

Remove zoom from RMB while holding a melee weapon and use it to block, horizontal swing or a power attack.

I just don't see the need to zoom while in a melee fight.

You might need to zoom in while holding a melee weapon, and I dont see how can you block a zombie attack with a shovel, crowbar etc.

then if you need to zoom you could take the "combact" mode off and i was meaning blocking melees from players

The best way to enhance melee in an FPS is more guns. The less you have to deal with clunky and jerky fighting with no real body mobility, a rather fixed view, and a lack of peripheral vision the better.

I'm not suggesting DayZ isn't innovative, but it is still constrained by FPS mechanics. My screen is flat. My movement is WASD. My view is first person. Works great for shooting. Works terrible for melee.

I'm pretty sure all game screens are flat and most game movement is wasd. Many non-fps games are also first person( you also get third person). Not sure what you're on about.

I'm not being subtle or evasive here, but I'll try again.

Melee in FPS style games is terrible.

Still its very important in DayZ and this...

... is just crap. For an FPS game guns would be better but in DayZ its not just about shooting. Melee is a big part and should be one.

But it sucks. It will always suck. Therefore, it should be minimized to a utilitarian purpose. It serves a role, but should never be the main role, because it sucks and isn't fun.

The best implementation of melee combat I have seen in an FPS is from Far Cry 3. Unfortunately, it was "take-down" based, which doesn't work in a multi-player game.

I don't mind melee as the "oh crap I'm out of options better twitch-punch a guy to death", but as the primary combat, not something I'm interested in. Therefore, my opinion, that the best way to make melee better is to minimize it and focus on the strength of the game play. Shooting is the strength of the game play. If you want people to do things other than shoot, don't make them combat things.

This and jab style attacks you can do quickly from a blocking position.

Blocking while being attacked will do a number of things depending on what you got coming at you.

You may parry a shot to the side sending the other guy off balance.

Stuff like that.
