Photoshop-Protip for maximum apocalypse-effects: 

Duplicate the layer of your picture.

Give the upper layer 50% transparency.

Color saturation of the upper layer: 0

 

Funfact: The whole movie 300 was made with this effect ^.^ .... it was a 2 hour homoerotic manowar-video without music though.

Cheers :) Full settings in game with 200% resoluition and a free program called Photoscape, just mucked around with some colour levels.
