Hacking - Thoughts and Questions about how it might be prevented

Recommended Posts

Allright, so I've been killed by hackers and from within the debug-forrest a whole bunch of times. Just now, me and 7 other guys posted all around the NW Airfield, died all at the same time from a huge explosion, killing people at distances of atleast 600 meters.

I don't know much about how Arma2 and DayZ works, but as far as I know it's script-based. So a couple of questions regarding this;

If the game is scriptbased, and hackers hack by running scrips that aren't supposed to be run. Wouldn't it be possible to make DayZ servers not accept scripts that aren't supposed to be run in DayZ?

If that is not possible, is it because of DayZ or Arma2 or the engine itself?

I have no idea how the scripting language work in Arma2, but I can't imagine that it should (assuming there's engine support) be to hard to make a line like say addWeapon weaponName only accept weaponName if it's actually supposed to be in DayZ.

I understand it would probably result in more work for the developers, as they would basicly have to maintain a list of every accepted scriptline in DayZ. (might be automated).

It would probably also increase server load as every scriptline would have to be checked against allowed scriptlines before running.

Pretty much everything below this line is a rant and can be safely skipped.

Theese are all just thoughts I have. I am getting sick and tired from getting killed by hacks. I don't care about my gear, I don't care if I get oneshot in the head from a sniper as I cross a field. But someone dropping a JDAM, or whatever that was, on my head is a bit irritating.

I know this is an Alpha (or it's called Alpha even tho Alpha is internal testing builds, Beta is public testing builds, thus this should be called Beta), but that doesn't matter. Some people beeing able to do stuff like this is a huge problem. And Alpha-state is the state in which to iron that out.

Maybe it's not beeing prioratised because Rocket knows it will no longer be an issue if game is ported to Arma3 or even crated as stand alone. Since either Arma3 port or stand alone will happen before or at the same time as release.

I just hope it gets handled soon enough, because alot of the the players (testers) will get tired enough of it to quit.

I have no problem with anything that gets patched in or out of the game. Pitch black nights, superzombies, starting items, it's all part of building the game. Hacking and Debug-forrest abusing is my only greviance.

I'd love to keep testing. Our homeserver was testing a recent relase and server admin said they wanted us to test framerates in bigger towns. I was in Stary atm, with like 5 players, all friendlies on the server. I could have farmed the military tents or ran to NW Airfield. Instead I sprinted laps around Stary fiering my weapon to spawn and aggro as many Zeds as I could to check framerate (which stayed nice and high btw, well done on the optimizations). Zombies eventually took me out and I had to start all over from scratch. I don't mind, I'm thankfull for beeing able to help advancing this game. But if I keep getting bombs dropped on my head, I'm probably gonna quit.

Some of you might say "go ahead and leave, 1 out of 300.000 players is nothing". But I bet you there's a whole bunch of me's out there thinking the same thing, and the me's are the ones you want to keep around, not the hackers.

TL;DR

Hacking bad, can haz stop plx? + rant.

Agree. I bet you are correct about the porting to Arma 3 or standalone, alot of this probably would be a non-issue by then.

In b4 "THIS IS ALPHA LOLZ GET A DICTIONARY" idiots.

ArmA has a pretty powerful scripting language which it can use to pretty much alter gameplay. I suspect DayZ can mitigate some of these issues but I am not sure they can stop everything. ArmA is meant to be very mod-able so there might be no way to stop it completely. Just report people who are doing this and hopefully it can be cleaned up at least a little with some bans.
