Is melee in the game?

I have this question because I seem to never spawn with a pistol anymore but I do seem to find hatchets every once in a while. So can I use those as a melee weapon or no? I haven't tested it because I haven't found any sort melee looking weapon.

Yes, you can. Hatchet and crowbar are functioning melee weapons.

Using a hatchet will get you killed quick. Zombies have more range, and hit harder than you hit them. Dunno about the crowbar, haven't tried one yet.

The hatchet is fine if you don't get swarmed and keep your distance, it one shots infected ones if you aim for the head. It also seems to have a small range of about 2-3m.
