I've read everywhere that it isn't an issue and can be skipped, however, when I do skip it-- which I don't believe I do, because it doesn't give me the chance?-- it takes me back to the list of servers to join. Any suggestions or know-hows to fix this issue?

Huh. On the server screen, it says "Waiting for character creation" -- or something along those lines, in the background after I make an attempt to join. Is there away to lower the Server Screen?
