I have yet to figure out what good it does to make a sawed-off other than making it smaller so you can fit it in your backpack

That is the only advantage.  The full size gun still has enough spread for close range while keeping a tight enough pattern to be lethal out to 50m.

 

Sawed offs let you use SKS and Mosin while still having a close range option. If you have an M4, you don't need a sawed off unless you are just playing around.
