MAzing87 1 Posted February 20, 2014 Hey all, I am fairly new to pc gaming (1 month in) and very new to this forum. I was told by a friend to check out Dayz, but I had some questions. Can I run Dayz? My build: AMD FX6350 3.9Ghz/GT 630 2GB oc to 795Ghz/8 GB Crucial RAM/500w Corsair PSU/Windows 7 Secondly, this mod is available on steam for $30. Is there a way to try it out before I buy? Is the $30 just for the mod or is this for the standalone game as well? Third, tips on surviving? Thanks to all.
tobias winfro 305 Posted February 20, 2014 (edited) You should be OK to run the game, no there is no try it before you buy it. Check out some YouTube videos if you haven't already just to get some background on the game. As for survival tips, get off the coast asap. Even though people shout friendly or type it in chat, be very cautious around other players. Not everyone is going to shoot you on sight, you may be detained, feed rotten food or disinfectant spray but don't worry, not everyone is this way. Most fresh spawns have nothing to lose by dying so they may just run at you swinging away like Mike Tyson just to get your loot.Take your time and scope out the situation when entering cities or military barracks. While there is a server hopping timer, people will camp and server hop to get geared up, just keep an eye on things around you. Most people at the military sights are presumed to be hostile and will kill you no matter what they say. I would also suggest a low population server until you get the hang of playing and if it all possible, get a buddy or 2 to run with. Chernarus is a big map and gets quite boring running with no back up or at least someone to talk to.Last but not least don't get attached to your gear, Dayz is a cruel mistress and this is alpha. You will encounter bugs and other inconveniences that will make you want to break something. Good luck and hope to see you down the road some day. Oh the 30 dollars is for the Dayz Standalone alpha. There is a Dayz mod but its for arma 2, while it is built from the mod, standalone is a seperate monster. Hope this helps Edited February 20, 2014 by Tobias Winfro
crimsonbzd 247 Posted February 20, 2014 Check your PC against the minimum requirements, but I wouldn't suggest playing right now unless you meet Recommended as they're a lot of optimization left to do. Sorry I don't know AMD parts like that off the top of my head. The Mod is COMPLETELY SEPARATE. To play the mod, you must purchase Arma 2 and Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead (or the whole complete edition at this point.) I, personally, would recommend skipping the mod at this point and going straight for the SA. It's coming close to the amount of features implemented as the complete mod, and I find the SA far more enjoyable anyways. I bought both the mod and standalone at the same time a bit ago. Tips: If you're alone, no matter your intentions, you're prey.

Update: I can run the game based off of the recommended pc settings. Edited February 20, 2014 by MAzing87
MAzing87 1 Posted February 20, 2014 I just read up on this. I do have to get those 2. But it also said, in order for me to get high quality textures, I should get the big bundle which includes 3 dlc? I can't just get the 2 SA and get great visuals?
nimmerzz 17 Posted February 20, 2014 I tried the MOD first and only paid $6 for the Arma2 Complete pack. It was a sale so search around on gaming sales sites. I prefer the mod right now. There is so much more to do other than run from town to town dodging snipers. Hauling ass on a bike through Elektro is a hair raising experience. I hear all kinds of close gun shots but so far no hits!! LOSERS!!! LOL Get the mod so you can understand the DNA of DayZ. Its clunky for sure. But you will understand the vision of DayZ much better. There are plenty of servers to play on, both empty(good for learning) and full(good for scaring the shit out of you) Especially if you can find Arma2 for super cheap. tobias winfro 305 Posted February 20, 2014 (edited) Yes there is a lot of backstabbing and all sorts of treachery when other players get involved. Seriously though, if you have to engage other people, don't sound like a total douchebag. There are times when you will perceive the events around you as a no win situation but you get out unscathed, then there are times when you might get a chance to escape and get axed/shot in the back. Each encounter you have will be different just keep an eye on the surroundings and keep a look out for the sneaky guy trying to flank you."New/fresh" spawns aren't always new players, keep them in front of you and never let them out of your sight, as most people are looking to gear up and get back to playing team death match. Cherno, Electro, Balota and the northeast and northwest airfields are not good places for you to go unless you have a death wish, are geared up or you are Morgan Freeman but last I saw he got gunned down too so that's not even a sure bet.Bandits and KOSers are 2 different things, so try not to get them confused but occasionally you will meet a hero, who will do his or her damnedest to assist you. I've only met a few of them, some are cool but most come off as that creepy old pedophile living in your neighborhood trying to lure kids into their house with promise of candy, booze or cigarettes. Oh and ladders are not your friend. No matter how inviting they look, they are never to be trusted Edited February 20, 2014 by Tobias Winfro
