Managed to get 2 female friends playing the game and they got all excited about the idea of actually playing with female chars.  

We only play vanilla mod servers (hive)

From what I understand ... the first time you connect on the server it doesn't give you a choice ... but once you die and respawn ... you are given the option.

 

Well this has been how I have perceived it. HTH.

Look for an Ephoc server called Total Calamaty. I was just on it, it has gender select.
