TE5LA 0 Posted February 16, 2014 So far, I'm glad I got all the Arma games for $6 through Humble Bundle 'cause this has not been a pleasant experience thus far. Installed Arma 2 and Arma2:OA and DayZ from the Steam package. Ran Arma 2, no problems. Ran OA, no problems. Tried to run DayZ, errors. In the Steam version, there are two options of launching: 1) Play Arma2 DayZ Mod2) Play with Beta Patch If I try option #2, I get a Steam error about a missing executable. I follow a troubleshooting link that tells me to exit Steam, delete the 'appcache' folder and restart. Same error. If I try option #1, I get a loading bar with ten boxes, eight of which are checked, then an error: Addon 'dayz_anim' requires addon CA_CommunityConfigurationProject_E' I click OK and the game loads. If I try to join a server or create a LAN server, I get random errors like: No entry 'bin\config.bin/CfgWeapons/m8_carbineGL.XM320Muzzle'. When the map opens in the LAN Host mode, I get a static screen where I can do nothing except press 'Escape' and see options of RESTART or CANCEL. I tried to login to someone's server and I was a bird flying and could do nothing else. I had to use Task Manager because even 'Escape' did nothing. I tried every key, no response, but I could fly around as a bird. I uninstalled DayZ and downloaded it again and everything was the same. Someone who plays DayZ told me to get DayZ Commander, which I did, and it said Arma2 was out-of-date and DayZ was corrupt, so I let it update and repair. It has made zero difference. Still get the same errors launching. I have no problems whatsoever running Arma2 or Arma2:OA. I have Windows 7 64-bit with an i7-2600k running 16GB 2133MHz RAM, a GTX680, a 500GB SSD. Dchil 829 Posted February 16, 2014 OK, DayZ commander may update you to the newest patch but the patches are incremental. That means you have to download an earlier patch (i believe it's 1.59 or something) then run DayZ commander's updater. But before you install the mod you must run the base game of Arma 2. It is recommended that you watch some videos posted here on how to install DayZ mod.
rustledmyjimmies 361 Posted February 16, 2014 Yeh, in my opinion you should use dayz commander- the steam version of Dayz is horrid.
TE5LA 0 Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) Yeh, in my opinion you should use dayz commander- the steam version of Dayz is horrid.Yes, I used DayZ Commander, as I said, and it is not working. So, are you saying that even though DayZ Commander says the game is the newest version (103718 Stable) and the DayZ mod is 1.8.0.3 (Up to Date), that these are incorrect? =fox= damocles 54 Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) Yeah, after researching the best way to get the mod working (before I bought anything) I opted to buy a DRM free version of Arma2:Complete and just use DayZ Commander to manage anything to do with the mod. Just out of curiosity you have the PMC, ACE and BAF expansions too don't you? As not all the weapons are in Arma2 and Operation Arrowhead alone. The Steam version of Arma2 is notoriously awkward to get DayZ to work on properly. However, once you get it working it's great. Best bet would be to get a friend who has it working to access your computer via TeamViewer to set the folders up for you and check you have the right patches installed. TE5LA 0 Posted February 16, 2014 Well, it seems to work if I launch the game using DayZ Commander, but I'm lost. Is it normal to walk so slowly and have no weapon to begin and not be able to use your hands to fight? I move like a snail unless I sprint which lasts a few seconds. I get attacked, I can't fight back. Guess I'm missing something.
=fox= damocles 54 Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) No, I have no clue what those acronyms are. I read you needed only Arma2 and Arma2:OA to run the mod. The acronyms stand for Private Military Company, Army of the Czech Republic (I got that one wrong it's ACR not ACE) and British Armed Forces. While the British Armed Forces isn't a big deal the other two will stop most of the missing .pbo errors that you'll encounter as those objects are contained in those DLC's. The British one is more beneficial if you are on a custom modded server that utilizes rMod and rMod2 (which you'll also need to download to access that content on the server as it's not standard in the @DayZ folder). If you'd like a hand in getting sorted out then come to foxcompanygaming.com and I'm sure someone on Teamspeak will be happy to assist you. As for the rest of your queries: To run rather than walk, you can double tap the "SHIFT" key to toggle between run and walk. or similarly you can just double tap and hold "W" to run but you will go back to default when you let go. On a standard server you will be lucky if you start with anything more than a Flashlight, 1 Bandage and possibly a can of food and drink. Some will give you more depending on just how difficult the server is set up to be. For example our Proving Grounds server (a heavily modified version of Overwatch) has AI bandits, AI Heroes and AI Survivors (as well as Zeds), that will react to you depending on how you choose to play. However the bandits are really tough and have a base or two along the coast and are a bitch to deal with so we start you of with a Tazer and a couple of cells for it as well as a couple of ToolBelt items to help you get past them and inland. Also as a fresh spawn you Halo Jump in, kinda like the beginning of Predators. It's not for the newer players though as it was designed to be really unforgiving. As for hand to hand fighting. The mod (so far as I know) never came around to implementing fisticuffs, although if you find a Hatchet, Machete or Crowbar, you can take them off your belt (if you have no primary weapon) and use them as melee weapons, although it's highly discouraged because they aren't very reliable. Hope I answered your questions :). Edited February 16, 2014 by =FOX= Damocles

Hope I answered your questions :).Thank you. Yes, I knew you could double-tap to sprint, only my guy must have smoked a lot because he can't sustain a sprint for more than a few seconds :D So maybe I could bite their legs off? You know, seeing as I have no arms. Haha, I don't know if I want to suffer enough dying to try and find a stick somewhere to defend myself. Lastly, do servers usually disable the 3rd person view or what is the default key for switching? [EDIT] Okay, I decided to install the Epoch mod and it's a lot different. I can move around normally, seem to be running at what I'd consider normal for most games. In DayZ, I was literally walking very slowly as if I were crawling. I tried the key that's supposed to toggle walking and it did nothing. In Epoch, I can switch between walking and running (normal) with Shift. This doesn't work for me in DayZ. I also had a gun which was a better feeling, but it was hard as hell to aim because there is no crosshair and no hard sights either. I guess Arma is one of those games that thinks it's somehow more realistic not to use a virtual crosshair, but shouldn't I at least be able to aim down the iron sight on a rifle? I could only spray at a zombie until I got lucky and hit it. I prefer crosshairs because I've never seen an FPS that properly models the viewpoint of aiming down hard sights. Another oddity I've noticed is that every time I exit Arma2, it launches TeamViewer. Huh? Thanks and hope this did not violate any forum rule about mentioning another mod. dayzgame 8 Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) The cause of walking slowly was probably due to either being in a crouched position (X key - use C key to stand) or having walk toggled on (2xLeft Shift key). As for weapon sights you need to use the optics key (Right Mouse button) to use sights or scopes. All new players should review the key controls first. To do this in game press ESC go to Options and Controls and review all the keys. Or review the keyboard layout in the manual: http://cdn4.steampowered.com/Manuals/33930/ARMA2OA_manual.pdf Edited February 18, 2014 by dayzgame

Thanks and hope this did not violate any forum rule about mentioning another mod. 1st of all, don't worry about bans or anything, after Dean Hall got the ok from Bohemia to lead the StandAlone project he handed off the Mod to the community. Epoch is just one of those "DayZ variations" that came from it. So it's all good to talk about it. Your inability to enter 3rd person and your lack of a floating crosshair suggests to me that you may have your server filter set to Hardcore Servers, so you may want to check with that. Also you'll be able to tell if 3rd person is enabled if, somewhere in the description, it says "3PP:ON". The cause of walking slowly was probably due to either being in a crouched position (X key - use C key to stand) or having walk toggled on (2xLeft Shift key). Definitely review the controls lists, you may find an action that you want to use that isn't mapped or you may want to change your mappings if you aren't comfortable with them the way there are.
