Osi's new player survival guide

Recommended Posts

Ok so before i start on the guide i would like to impart some pearls of wisdom about the game. You're going to die. You're going to die with no gear. You're going to die with the best gear in the game. You're going to start over with nothing. You're going to meet people who will shoot you on sight. You're going to meet people who won't & might even help you. Now that you're clear that survival is a challenge in this game i can now move on to the guide.

Starting out: 1 bandage 1 pain killer. Flashlight.

Look where it tells you you've spawned on the right side of the screen. This is important to know where you are on a map (use this map to find where you are (http://dayzmap.info/).

Nighttime server: Do not play at night just yet. This is for more advanced survivors.

Lootable buildings: Not every building is lootable, but knowing which are will make your survival even better. The best buildings for guns,ammo,food/water,items are: Markets (look like 7 elevens), Schools (3 storied gray buildings), Apartments (red 3 story buildings), Hospitals (gray buildings with huge glass fronts), Firehouse (3 story tower with gray building and 3 large red doors).

Industrial buildings (factories, dock warehouses, etc: contain vehicle parts), Gas stations (gas/vehicle parts).

Small coastal towns you start near:

Most new players are making the mistake of thinking that the small towns have food/water/guns and going into them and getting killed by zombies. Avoid these.

Chernogorsk/Electrogorsk:

The next mistake is to head into Chernogorsk or electrogorsk in search of food/water/guns. Many new players are heading here, as well as Bandits. This means many of the loot spawns will be raided or have a bandit presence near them. Also it is hard to navigate these cities as a new player. Also bandits have taken to barb wire fencing loot spawn areas to make it harder to access them.

So Osi, what do you suggest we do as new players in order to survive?

Zelenorgorsk & the NW(Pustoshka & Vybor):

Very few players actually visit these major cities in the NW of the map and all 3 contain a market and also either a church/school building and other such buildings stock full of goodies. From Komarovo or even spawning around cherno you can make the trek to zelenorgorsk without having to eat or drink. It is VERY EASY to get what you need from this section of the map. Once you're feeling more experienced you can even push into the central area (stary Sobor) where military grade weapons are located.

Berenzio:

On the NE side of the map is another major coastal city where very few players trek to. It has all the major buildings that cherno and electro have except for the firehouses, it does have access to the airfield in the NE that has military weapons.

Once you've survived a bit in these cities, learned the looks of lootable buildings, you can then revisit cherno and electro if you ever die and begin to see these buildings in the city. The most important thing is to always use the map link i provided to locate these buildings in the city.

Zombie avoidance:

Zombies will see you far away if you're standing and running. They will see you medium range if you're crouching and running. They will not see you if you're prone crawling unless you're very close and in front of them. Approaching major cities it is always best to crouch run and then prone crawl. THis will take experience getting a feel for the zombie agro but eventually you ll get the hang of it. If you plan on running through the center of towns be prepared to have a ton of zombies chasing you forever, if this happens try to find a dock as zombies hate docks and wont go on them or try to Line of sight them through thick forests or around buildings or through them.

Player confrontation:

When possible use direct communication to ask if friendly or not. your voice can be heard form 80m and typing from 40m. IF they do not respond consider them hostile.

When approaching high loot buildings it is best to walk slowly to them using 3rd person if possible and using the camera to look around inside before entering. Also using direct comms to ask if anyone friendly is inside is a good idea also.

Remember, this is a survival game, other players are looking to survive and you never know who you ll run into. Most players who've been surviving for awhile most likely wont take the risk of losing gear they worked hard to acquire to a new player shooting them with a pistol in the face. Once you get to this level of gear on you, you ll understand. However, this doesnt mean that EVERYONE WILL SHOOT ON SIGHT. if you get the jump on someone and talk to them on direct coms their is the possibility that they wont be hostile knowing you could of easily killed them instead. The uncertainity of how people react is one aspect of what makes the game fun.

Co-Op:

In a game like this it is always best to play with friends as its always nice to have someone have your back.

finding your orientation on the coast:

every major coastal city generally has the ocean to your South. When you start off you're generally facing North, hence turning Right you ll be going east and left you ll be going west. Also read signs at entrances to towns to also find where you are.

closing pearls of wisdom:

don't get frustrated, we've all been here. The game requires a certain level of patience, understanding, Many deaths, and a huge pair of balls. Understand you ll encounter all the dregs of society armed with weapons who fire on you at seeing, honorable survivors who will give you a blood transfusion, and people who will just run when they see you. Its a sandbox game, make of it what you want to and just remember if you want to avoid the hunger game style deathmatch stay out of cherno/electro.
