Direction of sound

Hi all,

Can anyone please tell me how to change the directional sound in voice communication ? When I stand in front of a person and they talk I can nearly hear them. If I turn my character so I'm facing at just under 45 degrees to them their voice comes through loud and clear. It's as if they have to talk into my characters ear for me to hear them. If they are facing away from me and they talk, i.e. when we are running, I can't hear them at all. I have windows7 pro, creative sblaster and turtle beach x12 headphones. My voice is apparently ok.
