Top 10 Things to do in DayZ (While we wait for more)

Recommended Posts

Having played the Mod for over a year before Standalone was released I can't help but think that there was more cooperation among the players in the mod compared to SA. Maybe it was because most people had their "home" server where they had a base, or even just a tent or two somewhere in the woods, so they had a reason to play on that server time and again instead of starting each session in a new territory.

Inevitably they ran into the same names and got to know each other. The side chat was a great help in this. There wasn't much else to do while you ran miles through the woods other than talk to other people who were doing the same thing. You could get the general impression of someone before actually meeting them in the game. And one day, when either you or them got into trouble came the moment when that sentence appeared in side: "Hey dude, could you help me out?"

Next thing I know I'm driving to help out a guy I've never met in the game before wondering if it's just an elaborate trap and whether or not I end up losing my wheels and some gear. Usually it worked out and the survivor was friendly - just as he seemed on side chat.

I do miss the side chat sometimes, but hopefully the walkie-talkies will be good enough a substitute that will encourage players to form new friendships with strangers. Right now it seems half of the people in the game shoot on sight because they want to kill you and the rest shoot on sight because they don't want to get shot first.

Anyway, we all have a long way to go until Alpha is finished. If you ever get bored and wonder what to do in the game, here are a few ideas. Enjoy and don't take it (too) seriously!

You know you can actually read the book and not just spin the model...?

Haha, yes I know. Spinning the model seemed like more fun at that time. :D I have actually started reading War of the Worlds recently. I wonder if I can finish it before someone shoots me. Probably not.

Why not try gearing up a total stranger? I've actually been able to group up with two noobies and not get murdered. You can tell the noobies from the shitheads because the shitheads will try to punch you to death when you ask if they want some food. Just don't run up and say "HEY WANNA GROUP UP!?"

I personally like handing out food and supplies at the coast, although the server I play on has been overrun with people that just don't care anymore. People used to be greatful, now they try to punch me in the face. ^^

Try creating a character if you are into that RP stuff, don't just sprint for a set of camo and a ballistic helmet. I was a little bitchy after my last character so I ran down the coast naked looking to punch some bambi killers and waste their ammo. First thing I came across was a battle zone between a bunch of bagheads with makeshift clothes. Took a dead one's gear and clothes, then my friend logged in and we thought it'd be fun to dress a little unconventionally. After he left I found some black cargo pants and a stab vest, so I decided to try running without a storage vest or a hoodie, and ended up offsetting the lack of storage with a mountain backpack.

Now I'm trying to build a black cargo pants, hoodie, and beanie wearing bandit that only uses a .45 kept in his pants that robs people at gunpoint. Although I've never been a bandit before, and every time I try I end up asking if they would like some food. ^^

I know what you mean. I'm not a big fan of dressing up in military clothing. Wearing camo clothes, a ballistic helmet with a gas mask is becoming a bandit thing to do. Not because all who wear them are bandits, but when I get shot 9 times out of 10 the person (or people) who end me are wearing just those things.

I think other players treat anyone in military attire with distrust at least, if not with outright hostility.

Anyway, I decided to go for a less military look, sacrificing a few slots in the process, but I'm happy with the outcome.
