Using a red filter on lights is a basic military tactic to reduce visibility at night. there can be improvised filters using duct tape and a piece of plastic and stock ones wich would be better quality.Also some military grade equipement could have built in filters of multiple colours. Red light is actually used because it least affects your eyes ability to see in the dark. I do agree that this should be put in at some point though.
