Renting a Server But Not Really?

Recommended Posts

So let me get something straight here... If I rent a DayZ server and pay $75 - $100 Canadian a month (the payment of a small car). I have to follow the rules that the DayZ Developers have made? If I fail to follow these rules my server ($75 - $100 let's not forget) gets shut down no questions asked and I don't get a refund. Also from my understanding you're not allowed to kick and ban players because they can report you and have your server taken away from you. Hmmm..... I'll go with no thank you on that one! I'd have to be an idiot to spend that kind of money without the privilege of having my own rules and doing whatever I want on my game. I'd rather buy a new vehicle with that kind of money, then on a game server that I'm not even in control of.

If I'm wrong on this one can someone please correct me? I sure as heck hope I misunderstood.

Well basically yes, if you don't follow the rules you will get punished and as far as i know you are only allowed/applicated to kick/bann cheater from your rented server (if you have proof for it) and you are allowed to investigate problems on your server. Understand this as a donation to Dayz by renting your own server, with your help more ppl can play the game and you can boast about that if you want to ^^.

It is also perfectly fine if you don't want to donate to the game or if you can't afford it, nobody will hate you for that :)

Yes, that's all is correct, there are a few but clear rules about server hosting at this moment.

I personally don't care what happens on this subject but please keep in mind this game is in alpha and server hosting, like many other things, will probably change in the future (I can't imagine them not providing the possibility clan/private servers later on).

If you rent a server, You volunteer to provided a standalone server for the public, But you still need to follow the rules if you want to stay connected to the Public Hive. Without the public hive your server will not run.

Private server will be available at a later date, maybe once it out of Alpha phase. Or before.

The way I see it if I'm paying $100 a month the server should be run by my rules not a someone elses. Therefore I won't be renting one until the price gets reasonable and they get rid of these rules.

Same as renting a car. If you rent a car for that much, and break the rules associated with the car, NO MORE CAR! It's a simple concept. While the prices are OUTRAGEOUS for how limited control you get (I suggest waiting until private hives are implemented to purchase. Those have way more value to the host), the rules should stay. The rules keep servers straight. Imagine this: No rules. Do you know how many "Friend only", "No PVP or permaban", and "Team regearing! Nobody else join or kick!" servers there would be?

To sum it up, without the rules, the whole idea of public hives would be abused and exploited to shit, and loot would generally lose its value as long as you know a server host.

Again, to stress my point, renting a car is the same as renting a server. They both have utilities. But, if you break the rules associated with either of them, you are at risk of losing what you paid for without refund. This is what keeps server hosts following the rules.

Also, you ARE allowed to kick or ban players, you just need a reason. You can't kick/ban them on a blind assumption of hacking, or because you dislike their name, or because they killed you, or anything like that. You CAN kick/ban them if you see them teleporting around, using OBVIOUS cheats such as invincibility (Infinite Ammo cheats are not considered obvious to most) etc. Finally, I'm fairly sure Private Hives will run off of their own rules, as that's how they worked back in the mod. I think you did misunderstand, but I can see what you're trying to get at.

As long as you did not develop the game you pretty much have no rights till the devs allow you certain rights. And you don't have to rent a server.

No one's forcing you to rent a server, leave it to people that actually want to do their bit for the community.
