Grizzly2O 0 Posted June 23, 2012 Hey, I'm new here, and have been playing DayZ for the past few days. I'm absolutely in love! But I have one suggestion. I know that the starting gun was removed, probably because of PVP or something, but I think it should be brought back. I don't mind not starting with food or drink, but starting without a weapon is very limiting. If you alert even one zombie by accident, you have no means of defense. You have to high tail it out of there and leave the supplies you were about to grab. You either have to get luck and lose the zombie(s), or die. Second, if you come across a player or group of players that are hostile. you have no means of defense. So your only option is to some how dodge the bullets and escape, or die. In the long run, I think not having a means of defense in the beginning will deter a lot of players from wanting to continue playing, because of how hard it is for them to find a gun with which they can defend themselves and get supplies. Especially since the best place to find a gun is in cities, which are deadly when you have no means of defense. Thanks for making such an awesome mod!-Grizzly
ryan@fantikerz.com 5 Posted June 23, 2012 I think the reasoning behind removing the starting Makarov was to allow newly spawned players to build camaraderie with each other. As it turns out, that's a bit idealistic. The newbies are now easy pickings for geared up players and infected alike.>> Second, if you come across a player or group of players that are hostile. you have no means of defense. It doesn't really build camaraderie. It just makes, and only sometimes, groups of unarmed new spawns form, and then whoever finds a gun first guns everyone else down and takes the loot they gathered for himself. The starting gun doesn't even have to be really powerful. The Makarov takes 2-3 shots to kill a zombie, and I think a little more for a player. And if that player has a rifle or shotgun, you have no chance of winning in a gun fight against them.So really, giving a small 9mm handgun to a fresh spawn with maybe one spare mag is not at all bad. It gives them a secure means of defense against zombies and other players, but not much offense. I think it should really be brought back.
trifecta 0 Posted June 23, 2012 I am a new player and Spawned near Cherno (I have little ARMA 2 Experience). I sneaked into Cherno's supermarket without getting detected... I crawled for about 10 minutes. Anyways I found food, a map and watch m1911 and 4 mags in the vicinity. I then went scouting in Cherno on a low populated server (20 people) and found a winchester, cz 550 and an ALICE pack and a shitload of food and bandages. So it's okay to start without weapons, it adds more challenge to the game, but i do believe you start with a watch so you can find north and travel.
deepfried 95 Posted June 23, 2012 Yeah starting with a watch would be nice. But you know what? I'd like to see us start with nothing at all, not even the bandage and painkillers, I think that would be even more fun :DIMO a gun isn't even essential survival equipment. Useful and a prudent precaution, but not a survival necessity.
Adralimas 0 Posted June 23, 2012 I Agree with the starting weapon idea, Atleast give newbies a Knife or somthing they can defend themselves with so it's not all "Alert one zombie with no weapon = Instant Game over". Or maybe improve the stealth system somewhat more, It's good sofar, but if you're not gonna give us weapons to start with atleast give us Alternative methods of Dealing with enemies, Stealth and others. hazdude222 0 Posted July 3, 2012 They should give a melee weapon at spawn

Runtz 0 Posted July 3, 2012 I think this topic has been beaten to death and the starting weapon was removed for a reason. If you alert one zombie and you don't have a gun you're supposed to run up stairs climb a ladder, or a hill. Then just try again. That's realistic zombie survival. I like the game the way it is, and I don't think we need to make it easier in context of spawning with weapons. Also this teaches you to be more sneaky instead of going around and shooting zombies so you can get into that one house. disturbd 1 Posted July 3, 2012 Please learn to use the search feature. This topic has been done dozens of times already. Pick a topic and just continue the conversation.Agreed.But' date=' as I have said in another post this current patch [1.7.1.5'] is WAY to easy. I disagree with bringing back starting weapons. Hatches spawn like everywhere, get one.
onlyusemeazn 0 Posted July 3, 2012 Maybe we could all get a dull knife to fight zombies. lol Melee only time!

You are wrong about it deterring players and if you have to go into a city to find a weapon, you are very much mistaken and misinformed.

Probably a few other reasons, but the short version is that the game is better-off this way.
