Ammunition

Recommended Posts

I've seen this posted a few times, but I thought I'd throw my hat in to see what happens

I know the game is in alpha, but I think that the volume of ammunition available is far to high.

To solve this, I think that they should add a reloading mechanic i.e

they add the following items into the spawn tables:-

- cartridge casings of the various calibers.

- primers

- gunpowder

- lead items (wheel weights, fishing line weights etc)

- molds

- scales

- clamp

- Manual

these should be spawned in in industrial (molds, gunpowder, primers, clamps and cartridge casings) residential (scales) and shops (lead items)

Now, as I have done this personally so many times I have lost count, here's how it works.

you melt the lead down on a gas stove (I use a cooker, but they have a portable one in game that would work) and then pour the molten lead into the mold, this results in the projectile part of the round. You then have to put the primers into the cartridges, you don't need any special tools to this, I've done it on a flat surface (not recommended). so you now have a cartridge with the primer in it and the projectile, you need to consult the manual to find out how much powder you need, which you can measure out with the scales, and then load into cartridges. You can use a clamp to press the projectile into the cartridge (you can do this, but don't try it at home).

this gives the advantage of being able to play with the amount of powder you load into the cartridge, so an overcharged round would travel faster, doing more damage, but would be a lot louder drawing more zombies. You could also undercharge the round, creating sub-sonic ammunition, that would do less damage but also make less noise, drawing less zombies. You could even pair it with a suppressor to make it even less noisy.

if finding primers laying around is out of the question, you can even make your own, all you need is matches, an empty can of coke and a paper hole punch. You cut the top and bottom off the can and cut it so you can lay the metal flat. You then you the hole punch to cut out a circle, which you then press into where the primer goes, which makes it into a cup shape. You then cut the material off the top of a match head, and cut it into a fine powder, which you then put into the cupped piece of metal and load it into the cartridge as a normal primer. It sounds unreal, but I have done it myself, and though not the safest way to do it, it would get the round downrange in a pinch.

Doing this would make people a lot more cautious or expending ammunition as pre made is a lot rarer and it would take a lot of work to get more.

Seems to complicated when it takes 4+ rounds to kill someone.

In chernarus, the only guns fire either common or military-surplus/issue ammo. Finding a 5.56 mold there would be extremely unlikely.

Maybe if they add rarer guns and ammo, like .44, .30-30, ect. Although i doubt your going to find many of those in russia either.

granted, but when you have M4's and boxes of 5.56 ammo laying around, a mold wouldn't be to much of a stretch of the mind.

It can't be more complicated than the current feedback system for health, hunger and thirst. It would just be a bit of a learning curve.

Reloading could be feasible with certain rounds, and would add to the game. Just make reloading equipment EXCEEDINGLY rare.

But add wrong powder or the wrong amount and the bullet will stick in the barrel, or the gun will go kaboom.

Unless you can mould copper jackets around those soft lead 5.56mm bullets you're planning to make, they won't even feed.

wrong, they do feed, granted they will lead the barrel and aren't as accurate as a FMJ round, but they will fire, I know this because I do it every other weekend.

I have a AR15 that's been converted to straight pull so its UK legal, the rounds feed fine but they lead the barrel up something chronic, I use gas checks to stop it.

You can plate the rounds using copper sulphate and electrophoresis, which is easy enough to do once you have the set up done proper and understand the science behind it, but I wouldn't expect them to go that far in a game

and that would make doing it without finding a manual stupid, but it would add an extra layer of realism to it.

M4 is a very different beast from a civilian AR-15 with a straight-pull bolt.

For a start, the M4's barrel has a different feed-ramp profile to deal with the FTFs caused by the high bolt speed due to the carbine length gas system.

If Colt had to do that to load M855 Ball rounds reliably, a jacketless soft lead bullet doesn't stand chance UNLESS you drop the rounds into the chamber manually and hit the bolt release each time.

granted, i've never fired an M4, an SA80 yes, but not an M4, so blame it on lack of experience with the weapon system.

yeah, I can see where your coming from, the high bolt speed and a feed ramp that i'm unfamiliar with could chew up an unplated round.

but that doesn't make them of the idea unusable, you could manually feed them in like you said, would help if you didn't have a magazine, but you could also use them in bolt action rifles, or pistols (never tried that but i heard that it works).

thanks for the info btw, its always good to learn more about your hobbies :)

It probably won't take that many rounds when gear damage locations are fixed. Right now a shooter has to basically ruin all of your gear to really hurt you instead of just the object in the path of the bullet.

I was actually thinking about this a couple of weeks ago and its great that theres a thread already started. I would like to see pre-made components available for civilian weapons and just make some of the other ammo a little more scarce or just make reloads a little less powerful than premade. Really with the new crafting kits it would be easy to just add a reloading kit, various molds for ammo and have players use powder, scrap, and primers to make their own custom reloads. Yes I know casing and bullets are much more complicated to make but for the sake of game mechanics I think it would work and add another dynamic element to survival in a post apocalyptic setting.
