need an explanation on a few things.. please help!

Recommended Posts

okay, so to start off, im finding it very troubling to get to guns.. its probably my fault, which im sure alot of you will point out. but it seems to me like there are very little guns around.. with over 40 hours played its taken me A LOT of mindless roaming around to find my first m4, still havent seen a mosin or a shotgun.. plenty of ammo though!(ive also watched countless videos on youtube just to get an idea of where to go..) which brings me to my second question.

will it get any easier to navigate around the map? luckily i have one other friend that plays, but when we play at different times or alone, we both find it VERY hard to find eachother. i know that there are map sections that you can find.. but that honestly doesnt help. unless im missing a key factor in knowing how to use the darn thing.

ive asked around for quite awhile and i cant seem to figure this one out.. my screen has been grey for awhile now, but i play so cautiously! i havent been injured or ran out of food or water.. and i cant figure out why its grey.. im completely at a loss on trying to figure this out, maybe its just a bug? idk..

if anyone would be kind enough to give me a few tips on these issues im having it would be greatly appreciated, im also looking for friends to take me under their wing! my steam name is drgreenz420 feel free to add me, ill take any advice i can get, hopefully this didnt sound like a rant to anyone im honestly just trying to learn the ropes.. youtube videos only help so much.. an actual explanation in game would be 100% better than "trying" to figure it out on my own, i do understand this is in alpha.. but im brand new and maybe im just having these issues due to bugs or glitches. thank you in advanced for any explanation given!.

1: I have only found 1 Mosin spawned. All of my other mosins were taken from other players. Don't despair. M4s are all over the map. Locate military buildings (such as Fire Stations-which have a low M4 spawn rate!!-barracks, hangars, or air control towers. You'll learn to recognize each by sight) and search them

2: The map will get easier to navigate the more you play. DayZ MOD players have an advantage over you because the Arma 2 Chernarus and the DayZ Chernarus+(+?) are very similar, and in Arma 2 there is a mission editor function that allows you to spawn units anywhere in the map. There are also missions, etc that take you all over the map. Honestly, just playing a lot will help you recognize things.

3: I *would* help you but 1: I have moral issues against metagame VOIP (it's cheating, though most cheaters players will tell you different) and 2: Between Battlefield 4 and ArmA 3's second campaign release, I'm pretty busy. AP World History/pre-AP English are doing a cross-class collaborative research paper as well so it's like fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu I just want to pwn nebs but my teachorz no let me :(

Oh...man...some spaces between those questions would make it a lot easier to answer those questions.

1. Guns have low spawn rates.  In fact, their spawn rate was just decreased.

2. There are online maps for DayZ.

http://dayzdb.com/map

Some consider it "cheating" to look at the maps but I'd say a majority of DayZ players have scoped out some DayZ maps at some point in time.  Many of the old mod players don't need/use maps anymore because they've played the mod for so long and the Standalone map is very similar to the original mod map.

After a week or two, you won't need the map as much and sooner or later you won't need it at all.

The easiest way to group up, is find a town, on the main road leading in and out there should be roadsigns that tell you the name of the town.  Work from there.

It's important to note, signs in-game show town names in Russian.

I.E. Могилевка in-game is a town called Mogilevka.

There is an in-game compass, which isn't too uncommon and is a great tool.

3. If your screen is grey, you're suffering from a condition, probably blood loss and you're probably going to die sooner or later.

There's a guide here explaining status ailments/cures:

http://dayzdb.com/guide/11-standalone-status-effects

There are other similar guides on the forum.

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/159492-great-guide-for-new-players-tells-you-what-each-symptom-means-and-how-to-cure/

4. I wrote a Survivor's Guide for the DayZ SA, which is a basic walkthrough for new players (link in my sig)

There are other useful guides throughout the forum as well.

It's easy to get a gun if you server hop on ther very top of Fire stations, schools and army bases but this will destory everyones game plan when the developers create a system in stopping this easy way. I do admit I server hop to grab a pistol but then I like to kill kitted up folk and steal thier gear, rifle etc. It's dirty but meh, thousands are doing it lol. **I'm all for starting naked every server you join**

You can also suicide as well to get a good spawn location, this is also cheap tatics but again if you goto key areas, you'll find the ground littered with dead bodies... almost everyones doing it... quickest way to meet up with friends(can't be arsed with the run simulator)... Doubt they'll ever beable to sort that one out lol... fix the spawn locations (they suck) or transport (car - helicopter)

If you check out a Day Z map online and look at the bottom cities, Eletroz and cherno, that's where the party is... millions of bandits/snipers are stealing and looting each other lol... Just a very hardcore battlefield tbh... MAKE AMMO RARE!!!

I'd recommend not asking about and just explore the game yourself and see where you go... once you start to get into the Call of duty/Battlefield side then you'll find it hard to go back to the way the game was intended.

The shotguns are only in experimental right now. I've found mosins in residential areas quite often. Look in office buildings and bars/inns, especially. Also will find magnums and 45s in offices, and the rare m4 (if they still spawn there). Otherwise haunt the military locations and the ship on the northeastern coast. Check cars for maps. If you can open a door on a car, open all of them and check each side for map fragments.

And don't server hop. Don't be a douche.

thank you all! much appreciated. and i do use the map :( i know its cheating but after i spent and hour walking in the same direction and didnt hit a border i was blown away.. at the size of the map (never played any of the arma games)

i have a couple more questions if you wouldnt mind answering them,

1. the terminology of the server names.. ive found one that i enjoy VERY much its no pvp <thats the easy one i understand what pvp means but some say NO KOS (which i think means no "kill on sight"? others state other things if you can fill in for me as im drawing blanks atm.. lol

2. i have heard that they will be patching spawn hopping servers soon..ish, so i was wondering if there were any other useful methods of obtaining guns, other than killing yourself and losing all of your gear and or spawn hopping for gear?

3. is it best to look for a server listed as close to your actual state? in a few servers i find myself not being able to play for too long before being disconnected , not sure if it helps to join servers listing a location near you?

thanks again i wasnt expecting such quick and awesome help. i love the links! (and i laughed very hard when i noticed i could give you my beans!!! haha)

Use the Dayz DB map Chernarus+ don't give a crap if its considered cheating thats just silly. If the RPers and hardcore players want to play with out it thats fine but its not a cheat to use them.

Shotguns are not in game yet and gun decreased spawn is not in game yet they will be in next build which they are hoping will be 23 of January.

Also check these guides my friend and all will be answered.

Ah, your formatting is much better!

1. KOS = Kill on Sight, PVP = Player Vs. Player, PVE = Player Vs. Environment, 3PP = 3rd Person Perspective, ON means you can switch between 1stP/3rdP, Off means it's 1st Person only.

You don't really need to worry about the numbers and other stuff.

You should know though, for Public servers "NO KOS" / "NO PVP" is completely unenforceable.  It is against the official server rules to kick or ban players on Public servers for killing you and currently players can only host public servers.  If you are kicked or banned on any server for killing a player, that is a violation of the official server rules.  That said, many servers will use "NO KOS" or "FRIENDLY" to lure players in but make no attempt to enforce it.  Such "friendly" servers are often far less friendlier than normal servers.

You may also see many servers with names like "NO JOIN", "DONT JOIN", "AUTO KICK", "CLAN ONLY", etc. These servers are in violation of the official server rules.

2. Killing yourself is not an effective means of getting a "better spawn location."  Often such players will waste more time suiciding repeatedly than they would if they just set out to their desired destination from the get go.

Try the DayZ wiki here:

http://dayz.gamepedia.com/DayZ_Standalone_Wiki

They list areas and building types where various items/weapons normally spawn.  The DayZ DB Map also has interactive filters that highlight various spawning locations on the map.

Schools are almost guaranteed to spawn Mosins.  Military Camps and Airfields will often have M4s or M4 parts, although their spawn rate has been significantly reduced.

3. You should always aim to play on low ping servers, 100ms or less is ideal.  You should also give a server browser an extra 30 seconds to a minute to fully list all the available servers.

Alternatively, you can also search for servers much more efficiently here:

http://www.gametracker.com/search/dayz/

and then enter the IP/Port in manually of the server you want to connect to.

2.  Hit up low population severs and search the military bases and airfields.  Still server hopping after a fashion, but how does one Alpha test a gun when they can't get off the beach to find one?
