Containers instead of random loot

Recommended Posts

The loot as it is now is a really cool Idea...

BUT

The rooms feel empty, the items spawn at ridiciolous places like fireaxe in a restaurant ( whaa... ? ). And as far as I know the Engine cant handle more objects then it does now so the most houses don't have usefull stuff in them.

Before I will talk about my Idea let's imagine for a second a zombie apocalypse.

So the outbreak started 60% of the population ( more or less ) Got infected. 30% Died. So we have 10% left. How does the planet look now ? Streets are filled with zombies of course. But what about the houses ? The shops ? Unless it isn't 20 years later there should be PLENTY of stuff in the buildings. Most of the food rotten of course and so on. But what do we have in Dayz ? Well the Zombies ate all the twinkies and didnt leave anything behind. They took the clothes aswell...

So let's get back to my Idea

Containers.

Dayz should have containers which would have loot in them. Trash bins, Closets, Cupboards, Shelves, Weapon lockers ( in police stations ),trunks in cars and so on.

First of all

It would make the game more enjoyable. Now it is ridicolous ( Finding a soda can on a chair, or one sardine can in the whole goddamn shop ).

Second of all

It would erase the problems with the engine not handling enough loot.

Third of all

It can make new game mechanics which could be actually more fun

So for example in closets we could find clothes backpacks and shoes and in the kitchen cupboards food and can openers and stuff like that. To make things better, Shelves could have for example 3 models : full, halfull, empty. Every model would represent one of those states. So in this example a full shelf would have a lot of cans on it, a half empty only a half of those and an empty a few open rotten cans with food. During the looting there could be a mechanic implement where there is for example a percentage of a chance of making a noise ( like in State of Decay ).

So why I think the Idea is good.

It would make the houses and places less empty then they are now. It would make sense ( where the loot spawns ) FINALLY. It would not affect the efficiency of the game as much as the loot does now.

Now the point is to keep it simple I know folks in the Dayz Community LOOOOOVE to exaggarate. So please if anyone wants to add something to this proposal just keep in mind it should be simple. SIMPLE. And I really encourage you Dean if you will have the chance to read this, to think it through. I mean many games did this thing. Project zomboid too and its a lot more fun if u can open containers and check what is in them then take one soda from a bed, chair or w.e

Cheers !

Nah,it's good.Loot are limited and don't stick out to the naked eye ;)

No need to search closets, cuboards etc because you would know where to search even before entering a house.

Now it's a bit of a challenge like Kyrah stated in the comment above.

The problem is the engine doesn't allow more objects or not really more. Because of this the game doesn't feel REALISTIC.

argument has no sense. Because the spawning of objects isn't RANDOM. I know where what is spawning. If we could search through containers we could search USEFULL stuff among destroyed ( for example 10 cans of food in which only 3 are O.K ) and a glimpse of eye wouldnt be just enough. I dont know why you try and defend a broken game mechanic ( because of the engine ), This random loot breaks the immersion of the game and its not really cool. Containers are a muuuch better Idea because NOW u enter a house and see like 3 items :a can,a hoodie, and a defibrilator ( out of the blue ) but with the containers you enter a house and see alot of possibilites. The engine cant handle more loot then 3 items per house or so. The mechanic isnt stupid it would be cool if it was done like in Skyrim but the Modified ARMA Engine can't handle this much stuff + ragdoll and this is why a container mechanic would make here much more sense. And in real life I would TOTTALY not look into the refrigirator and cupboards I would gladly look under the bed for a zluta klasika kola instead <facepalm> or instead looking into a closet I would just take the one hoodie from it because sure as hell there isn't anymore clothing IN the closet. I mean who normal puts his clothes into closets ?!

I'd be happy if some containers with loot were added in but did not replace entirely the current treasure hunt approach to loot. Would add some variety. As more variety of stuff is added I think the loot spawn locations will become more appropriate.

The world is supposed to be messy and untidy. Random loot represents the random chaos caused by multiple uncoordinated and individual attempts to combat the zombie apocolypse. We're coming in after most of the frenetic activity has ended and are left with only the leftovers from the initial struggle.

@Roshi yeah ofc the containers are just an Idea to make the performance better.

@DJPorterNZ I answered this hundred times already in only 2 replies... "Random chaos caused by multiple blablabla..." watch Walking dead, 28 days later. The markets are FULL with food and stuff like liquor and so on the only problem are the zombies and that the most food is already old and unfit to eat. If the majorty of humanity dies, the rest got infected. THe few survivors wouldn't be able to LOOT all the big cities even in 5 years. The most would die trying -.-' ...

All replies deny the fact that the engine is not made for a lot of single loot items in the game.
The idea of chaos and random loot everywhere might be good and stuff, but as Wulfic mentioned it already: the implementation just can't get it right.

I'd prefer a hybrid system with containers and some single loot pieces (e.g. under the bed or near a tree or something).

That would be realistic + the engine could bear it.

Personally I would prefer to find most of the loot on decayed bodies, especially the weapons. I find it really bizarre that there are no skeletons in the game.

This is actually one thing I have been championing. I really feel like the zombies should be some form of loot caches. When you kill them, they should be lootable and have a random drop, which could spawn on their deaths. You would be able to loot it but also would need the disinfectant spray to clean those items or you might become sick.

I also have been hoping that when players die, they would also become zombies instead of being hidden. The game could easily store a list of items the player had on death and respawn them when the zombie was killed by a new player. It would change the game a lot to see a player character standing around as a zombie in full gear.

Of course decayed bodies would also work as a Container. A Container system is just much better and would solve the performance problems + adding more immersion into the game. LIke for example if anyone is searching a house for loot they dont look at the ground the look in the drawers, refrigators, cupboards and so on. I hope someone from the devs would read this and think it THROUGH.

Cheers.

the engine "cannot handle" or "has been configured to spawn no more than" 3 items per house?

It was just an assumption. I do not know the actual but Dean mentioned in one of the streams the amount of loot decreases the performance. If it wouldn't then there would be much more loot. My post with the 2 pics says it all I will not answer any stupid arguments and stuff that was already answered again cause I lack the patience.

There are ways they can make this not so much of a problem, but regardless, the current state of things doesn't give you the information to conclude that we are already at loot capacity.

As for supermarkets being full or empty, this is not "the walking dead: the game", nor does the walking dead represent the canon of zombie movies/series or boast an accurate portrayal of reality.

If you refuse to listen, don't expect people to do you the favor.

I'd rather have to look around for things that have spawned then walk up to a shelf/locker/box and press tab to search it.

Also, as far as I can tell in DayZ the apocalypse has happened already. We're not at the start of a zombie outbreak, we're coming in after it has already wiped out most of the population of Earth. People will have looted anything and everything. A completely empty grocery store makes perfect sense because everything in it was stolen by people getting the hell out of Dodge.

Then go play The Walking Dead! Simple!

This is DayZ not some US pop culture TV program, and loot of the type you describe is not meant to be found everywhere you look. DayZ at the time you spawn is a world depleted of everything: food, drink, medicines, firearms, ammo and people. It should have nothing to do with efficiency how ever you're meaning that in the OP. Survival in DayZ is not meant to be GUARANTEED. You are meant to be spending ALL your time just trying to stay alive.

I actually would like a hybrid system like this. Desks and such should be search able. But make it so each desk, like a container has hide and unhide + and - marker. So you need to manually click the button, and the drawer is "open" showing the available loot. I like the system in place currently, but sometimes you get random items that seem really out of place. That, and being able to "search" things adds a bit to the authentic feel of the game, and makes looting a bit more of a dangerous proposition.

Acctualy DayZ is about 20 years after the apo started.

So the buildings should be more destroyed the environment should change ( forests spread and much wildlife ) and zeds should be dead ( no food = no Zeds ) like in 28 weeks later. Well all ur arguments are invalid as &^*% XD. The World in the game clearly shows a year AFTER, the loot 20 years after and no bodies on the ground, no trash means that what ? The zeds ate everything ? Theyre like rats or something ? And yes zombies die of hunger in dayz because these arent LIVING DEAD theyre infected like in 28 days later. Dean based on those zombies. So yeah pretty much everything u say is bullshit. I don't say what I WOULD PREFER to see in the game I say how it should be from a realistic point of view. If u can't see that then it means ur pretty much satisfied with the current state of the game which is out of place like Daemonkid said
