Cannot set default character

This post isn't for me, its for a friend of mine that just got the game. He's running it just fine, however he is unable to change his character from the default little woman that it spits you out as. The drop down menu's on the character creation are all blacked out, as well as the rest of the screen after clicking the button at the main menu to change it. Any ideas?

RESOLVED (Sort of)


We were able to regain the drop down menus to customize his default characters by removing all launch parameters from steam. I tried initially just removing -winxp however it did not work so we just removed all of them.
