Vehicle overhaul in DayZ compared to ArmA

Recommended Posts

Holy shit, tanks? They take, what, three to operate? Then you have to load them with shells, which would either have to be carried two-handed or take up more than 8 slots (can't fit in a pair of cargos or a vest). Not to mention treads and really specific engine components. That's just the beginning.

Then we need RPGs to take them out. We'd need destructible buildings... Just how much effort do you want the devs to put into something that a tiny fraction of players could ever have, shouldn't have, and if they did would mess up the balance and immersion.

Think battle-bus, "Technical", maybe armed hummer. And that's ambitious.

I haven't tried TOH so I don't know what the system is like there, if it's balanced with the right amount of complexity then staying low and dipping over rises would be very dangerous, also if your lucky enough to get a chopper up and running and the pilot screw's it up I doubt they'd let them fly again for a while.

The other thing to ponder is fuel, if it's a limited resource or the chopper has a small tank then flying all over the map will cause issues for the owner's, where can they get fuel? will the team need to lock down a facility to ensure a constant supply?  If they do won't that cause other groups to begin camping the hillside nearby to shoot them down as they come in/out?

Personally I think they should have a few choppers per server, but that opinion would change on how they where implemented, you could put 300 on a server and only one place to get fuel, that would cause a shitstorm.

Also no auto-hover, even if it is a real thing. No automatic parachutes either. You should have to equip that shit and it replaces your backpack.

Anyway, choppers aren't coming for a while if they are coming at all. Do we have any confirmed mentions of Rocket's plans for vehicles? Battle-bus? Specific engine components?

Hi.

I respect that you, like others would want them in, and I like that you want them to be difficult, but how about my last question?

I will add to it - If every survivor has the expertise to repair and operate helos, then why not tanks as well? Surely they would be a peice of cake to operate in comparison?

Regards.

If every survivor has the skill to handle military rifles with extreme precision, why not have .50 caliber rifles? Because it would make the game unenjoyable - just like tanks. Helicopters - provided it isn't an Apache or some non-sense - add an enjoyable goal to the game, be it fixing it, defending it, stealing it, or shooting it out of the sky. You can't apply logic like that to, well, any game situation. We're all doctors, mechanics, sharpshooters, highly trained rifleman and marathon runners because the purpose of the game is to simulate a zombie survival situation in a fun way in the same way that ArmA simulates combat in a fun way. As for making them extremely hard to fly...there is zero oppurtunity to practice with it in DayZ so that would be a little silly. Enough people are awful pilots anyways xD.

Again that would just add to the game I think, finding a person who's skilled enough to fly the thing? yeah those KoS players aren't going to be getting off the ground without trashing a few choppers first, if you do find a "pilot" can he actually fly? if he can, is he gonna jump in and nick off with the chopper you worked so hard to restore?

Yeah TOH is pretty good, it has different difficulties, such as trainee which is similar to arma two but has more flight mechanics. Another one is veteran which requires a flight stick to control torque.

I still feel this would be a good idea for the Hardcore servers and leave Regular servers with the current flight mechanics or the lowest TOH mechanics.

It would add more depth to the Hardcore rather than just no 3rd.

I'd be happy with a bicycle.  Motor vehicles are difficult to repair and maintain post-apocalypse, but bicycles are relatively easy and should be more plentiful.

Because if tanks were added, the expectation would be that you could use the main gun on them. If that were to happen, the balance of power for the tank driver/owners would be swayed so massively in their favour that it would break the game. The way to balance it would be to add RPGs, but they'd have to be common enough that, should someone roll into town with a tank, you'd have a good chance of finding an RPG and taking it out. Making RPGs that common would then result in people picking them up and blowing up buildings willy nilly, or blowing up newspawns for shits and giggles (the same would also occur with the tank, btw).

In short, it would break the game. The only way to add tanks that wouldn't break the game would be to add them but be unable to fire the main gun, or possibly even the HMG/LMG that would be on it, so they'd essentially become big, slow, APCs, and if you're going to do that then why not just add APCs? At least then the forum won't crash under the weight of all the "WHY NO TANK GUN FYER SHIT GAME!!!!" threads.

Any helicopters that are added should be of the unarmed transport type for the same reason. A Littlebird, whilst cool and fun, would require something like a Javelin be added to the game to balance it, and just what the fuck. It's a zombie apocalypse in Soviet Russia, not Battlefield n. The only benefit to having a heli should be that you can travel large distances quickly and possibly have a flying platform to shoot conventional weapons from, but heli's should be hard to find, hard to fix (scarcity of parts) and practically impossible to fly for the average person.

Hi.

Yes, I know tanks would break the game. That is my whole point. I feel helo's break the game as well. A group of skilled players can fairly easily dominate a server with a helo.

Even an unarmed little bird gives squads a substantial advantage. But if the mod was anything to go by, we will have armed blackhawks and gunships.

Regards.

And if the mod was anything to go by, the zombie AI wouldn't be getting rewritten from scratch ;). One reason the game is being built as a standalone is to get past the restrictions of having it as a mod of Arma II. Plus it gives the devs an essentially clean slate to start from again, learning from any mistakes made in the mod.

Anyway, heli's could be implemented and not break the game, but they'd have to be balanced carefully. A mix of making them difficult to find/repair and very difficult to fly would mean that only a few could use them with any great effect. They would have to be unarmed though and, I imagine, fairly small and/or fragile so that small arms fire could cause them some significant concerns.

They absolutely shouldn't be armed though. In fact, I'm not even sure military helicopters would fit. Smaller civilian helicopters may be be better suited. Dunno, I guess it's ultimately up to the devs. They may well already have a plan in place and in motion.

I was just playing TOH and found out that the little bird can be taken down with one rifle shot to the tail rotor, so helicopters could be added with out the need of heavy weaponry. I also agree that they should not be armed.

I don't have anything against armed choppers I just don't like the idea of needing 30 people to take a chopper down cos there isn't rpgs or the like. I'm cautious of rpg's and .50 cal rifles because of the outright griefing potential of them.

Once you hit the trees evading a chopper should be fairly easy cos I know for damn sure in some of the forests I have a hard time finding landmarks (read distant mountains). Running into the bush seeing or hearing the chopper come down to drop a squad to hunt your's down, can you evade them? kill them? or even circle around to steal the chopper?

I can see both side of the story here. Part of me wants choppers and planes, but a part of me just wants to be able to see a crash site, and loot the goodies :D
