What exactly is group chat... is it the steam group chat ;3? or... what?

And if it is the steam group chat or something, can you speak to your group members all over the map? Or must you be close to each other like in direct com.?

I assume Group chat is the same as Global, since everyone is on Bluefor. It only seems to work in pre-game lobbies, such as when waiting for the game to load.
