[Mechanics] Weight system?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I just thought of something interesting. How about, in addition to the inventory system, you add in a weight system, where your character can only carry a certain weight (Thus making you have to plan on what items you should keep in your inventory). It would make more realistic than having a character carry around 50 cans of beans. Also, every time you re-spawn the capacity of weight you can carry will be randomized between chosen min and max values (to define some what of a "strength" system).

Should be setup so every item has a weight and the more you carry the faster you tire. Perhaps the sprinting with 50 lbs on your back gets you worn out before you can out run those zombies!  Better stop and shoot off some of those heavy bullets...

lol.

Of course there should be a weight system. If u have no backpack u should be able to run faster and longer. If u have a mountainbackpack full of stuff running is not an option.

If u implement this there will be a reason to take of and hide your backpack before entering critical areas, just as u do in a real situation. Maybe store a smal sack or backpack in your big backpack just for looting.

This require that no dropped items dissapear of course. :)

It's all realistic and cool but so far the game can't comprehend how one person can carry more than 2 two-handed weapons at once. Believe me, IRL I would just tie a knot around 10 M4s using a rope and easily carry them or improvise a wheelbarrow. So until those issues are solved this system is a no no.

Ok Awruk, have u ever been running with an m4? I ran 20km with full military clothing, helmet, small backpack and the swedish m4. After those 20km u are not in a fighting condition for quite some time. And i could in no way do the same with 10 m4:s, could u?

I agree that u should be able to carry both a mosin and an m4, but it should affect the way u move. If u have a backpack full of ammo and food, its gonna be really heavy. The game deserves to be more that just a fps. It have the potential to be a overall military sim. Where u have to plan how to enter a city, what to carry with u, descide between speed or equipment etc.

If i have a backpack i hide it before enter a critical area, just as i would do irl. Because food and water are plentiful i drop the backpack as soon as i find a vest, no need to carry all the extra stuff yet.

Humans can carry a bit, honestly I think it should tie in with movement speed and stamina.

Have to take rests every so often and job slower as well as can't sprint for long.

Spreading gear through a group could mean you're faster than other players on their own and won't be caught by zombies so much.

I do believe in a kind of system like this.

Would increase the need to salvage all the time. When you can't carry resources for 10 years on your back, you go in towns more often. I also think that weight should have a different value for different kind of bags.

Let say a can of beans weight 1.

If you carry it in your pants it weight 1.5 (since canned food in pants are not comfortable)

The same can of food in a hoodie weight 1.3

In a normal backpack it weight 1

In a hiking backpack would weight .6

The logic behind it? Some item are made for you to be able to carry weight easily.

Carry all you camping gear inside a normal school bag and you'll struggle. But have the SAME stuff in an hiking backpack and you can walk for a long time without trouble.

Unnecessary complication to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

i'm gonna have to go with this too.

having items take X amount of space from your inventory is enough.

I actually think this should be implemented. For instance, I have about 3 full containers of amo, consisting of about 900 rounds, plus food, an axe and an m4. Walking should be difficult much less sprinting full speed for 10 min.. which I do when running from the NWAF to Pavlovo. It would make the game more of a challenge, which is why most people here are complaining about it, but I think that's a good thing. Once we have tents or player structures, hoarding everything on your person will drop dramatically. At that point the detriment will lessen while adding a lot more gameplay and realism.

10 m4s is like 35kg. That's not a lot. There's a difference in fatigue if you carry it in your hands and when you carry it on your back like a bag of potatoes. Yes it should affect my speed and fatigue but it's doable. And yes before entering combat you should drop all the unecessary stuff because a big ass mountain backpack could get you killed easily.

I think Rocket has already said on a live stream that encumbrance is planned. I don't like the idea of randomising the carrying capacity at the start personally, although it should slowly change with use over time and with nutritional status (and without overtly telling you that it has changed)
