Two Questions before buying the game

Recommended Posts

1) I saw in plenty Youtube videos that the mod (i.e. not standalone) was plagued by hackers.  Is this also the case for the standalone?  If so, is this likely to be addressed as the game progresses?

2) The impression from the gameplay videos is that the game requires a ton of time, or rather, long stretches of time.  For someone who typically gets no more than 1 to 2 hours per night, is it realistic to expect to achieve much of anything in such short periods of time (fixing a chopper or car, setting up a base, roaming around to find some action)?

Any thoughts and ideas on these topics from the community would be much appreciated!

Thanks all, ~G

1.The hacking side of things is very high on their agenda and why they changed the model to server-side stuff instead of client side (someone probably knows the technical terms and all that and can correct me if I am wrong.

2. With SA they haven't implemented vehicles as yet but 1-2 hours should be enough to get kitted up once you get used to the lay of the land. There are well documented hotspots where you can find action if you want it's just getting there. If you haven't played before then I suggest looking at the map http://dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus also I find getting a list of what the Russian road signs means helps a lot for navigating. At first though you will probably spend the first few 1-2 sessions dying of thirst. I would suggest seeing if you can group up with some experienced players via a request on this forum and have them show you the ropes.

1.

There will be hackers, but nowhere as much as the mod. And game devs always hate hackers so it will be addressed.

2.

There are no vehicles yet, just so that i said. It really depends, this game requires a lot of walking so if i only had 1 hour to play, i probably wouldn't go on.

1. There are hackers around, but they're (in my personal experience) not a lot of them, I've clocked over 90 hours in this game and didn't encounter a single one personally but heard stories from people who did. And yes, ofcourse the developers will do everything they can against hacking.

Be aware of bugs to which you cán lose your progress/character anyway, as an alpha it naturally isn't all that stable yet.

2. Well vehicles (or bases) are not (yet) in the alpha so if you're coming for that already, don't bother just yet. But it's definitely possible to have fun in 1 - 2 hours, just pick a crowded server and you will likely run into some unique player interactions. Some encounters may bring you more joy then others, but then that's just this game.

1) Not so many, of course security has still to be improved a lot and they will work on it.

2) I can't answer you about mechanics that are still not implemented (vehicles, bases...) but it is something that requires time.

You might also play in group with RL friends or in an online clan, sharing things and works speeds up things for sure, as it would do in a real survival situation.

Anyway in 2 hours you can have a good gaming session, in my opinion :)

The main question you should be asking yourself is if you understand that you're not buying a game. You're buying a very early ALPHA. This seems to be the biggest issue with people, they get upset over the things that come along with being an ALPHA.. like having to run everywhere b/c there are no vehicles.. Or glitching through walls.. or getting totally geared up only to glitch off a ladder and die, or to log off for a while and come back only to find your character has been reset somehow.

If you understand that and you are cool with it, then the other stuff will seem very miniscule in comparison..

Hackers are an unknown quantity..

As for time, that's all I get 1-2 hours and I find plenty to do in that time. You can achieve lots in an hour if you know where to go but thats all part of the learning curve.

If it was easy to master and easy to achieve things then the game wouldn't hold the fascination that it does.

The good thing is that you pick up from where you left off, ever single time. So provided you aren't dead then carry on tomorrow.

A million purchases can't be wrong!! ;)

If you only got 2 hours for sessions and don't play every evening, then expect until you got addicted to this unsmoothed gem, you won't play much other games for some time. Because, it has this oh, I will check this tiny bit and that ... two hours are over in no time.

2. Prepare to run.  A lot.  You might as well call this Running Simulator 2014.  Lol, but I still love this game and would recommend to a friend!

Thanks to everyone for the feedback so far.  Seems like 1hr to 2 hr sessions are feasible?

@BLFonsworth I fully understand it is an alpha.  The loss of stuff doesn't bother me.  I fully expect to loose my stuff all the time by death, robbery or, indeed, bugs.  That's why I specifically ask about the gaming experience itself.

Gizzur:

I only get 1-2 hours every few nights to game and have plenty of fun with DayZ. Your first few sessions might be a bit boring with more running than anything else, but once you get somewhat geared up and start running into other players, you'll be having fun.

Good Luck and beware of ladders.

Yea, 2 hrs would be enough time to get some gear and die, if you know where you're going.  Just do it!  You won't regret it.

You won't regret getting it, and as far as hackers there aren't that many imo. You will have plenty of fun in 1-2 hours a night!

I would say get it then.

If for no other reason than to be able to reserve a retail copy now for only $30 vs the full retail price when it comes out

1) you should expect tons of hackers at this stage. I wouldnt worry about it

2) no vehicles/bases yet, thats the first thing. you can play in 2 hrs chunks BUT... I think your expectations are a bit wrong - you dont achieve anything in DayZ. You just survive or die. eventually you can get some gear which you are gonna lose sooner or later. this game IS about dying, man. embrace it :)

one of my planetside fellows said something in the way of this:

"on paper, an alpha zombie sandbox game shouldnt work. and all though it is prone with bugs atm, but it does" and id concur. it has sucked so much of my time aswell now. i never played the arma2 mod. . or even arma2 come to that. but some of our guys and girl get into this in a good way, and posted pic's, stories on our planetside2 forum. so i thought "why not".

id have said it in another post, but the tension just running around solo can be immense when you see a zombie running at you at the last minute, or coming across another player can send you over the top and adrenalin kicks in. not knowing what action they will employ, if they use a mic and cajole you into their trust you start thinking is it a trap?.

For me it definitely gives out the vibe of " you versus the world", your world is as big as the map. And you'll start getting very protective of your backpack when you get some nice items in it. to the point of keeping away from people unless they are really up against it ( over run with zombies) then you just pull up the gun and help the newspawn, drop food/bandages/water

In a group the game takes a whole new stance. you have buddies protecting you also, so you become a bit more braver on helping the newspawns. but then you want more, and as a group you start taking the hotspots (cherno/electro/military bases) as a target for better loot.

Then something hits the fan and your respawning, to do it all again. and you do respawn, you will do it all again. because you cant resist now, your hooked. and your more aware. more cautious. more centered on being a survivor. not a statistic.
