McBonkhead 83 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) Server hopping. Yuck. Unless we are running around with pocket sized, parallel-reality, time-space portable wormholes. This isn't a good thing in the long term for DayZ imo. I had a light-bulb moment and was wounder if this simple idea has seen the light of day: Make the server you pick your 'default' server until your character dies, or go link dead. Log out, and the server you will log back into will be your default server, every time. Going link-dead, joining a full server, or dying will be the only way to change servers. We would get to know the names of the other players on our server that way too, and if you get killed and like the server, just log back on with a new character. Rinse, repeat. Feel free to shoot holes through this Idea if you can, or give it support it there isn't to many other ideas like this one floating around. -booya Edited January 16, 2014 by McBonkhead
MadMags 32 Posted January 16, 2014 Good idea. I'm sure people would find ways round it but its a good start I reckon.
TLa_Vanguard 52 Posted January 16, 2014 Great idea mate, people would save a lot of money on blood pressure tablets. :D
elf cakes 559 Posted January 16, 2014 you could just make it so you can only join a new server once every couple of hours or hour? that would certainly put people off. just put a warning when a person joins a server that says 'warning: you will not be able to join any other servers for an hour after joining.'
Monkfish (DayZ) 339 Posted January 16, 2014 Not a bad idea as it stands, although server hopping should become less of a problem once loot respawning is sorted.
komadose 190 Posted January 16, 2014 i just posted a spawning idea myself, but i like yours better... nice one.
AmmokKDE 8 Posted January 16, 2014 Well, i like the idea and i support the thoughts behind it.However, i would love to see the time of the day that is actually on the server before i join, so there is some hopping needed until i find one that suits me.Also an actually visible history would be great as well. For now, if the server restarts, you have no clue where you were.
JuX 72 Posted January 16, 2014 This idea pretty much beats the purpose of having cloud of servers to jump with your character. <_< Would be much better not to restrict server switching to play with friends, but you can still make counter-measures to stopghosting and looting, such as having timer with different factors. Last time when played and population of the serveryou are trying to join in, also once you are connected to different server you cant join previous one for a long timeto prevent ghosting. komadose 190 Posted January 16, 2014 you could just make it so you can only join a new server once every couple of hours or hour?join a server -> friend comes online and asks to play with you, but the server you are on is full -> can't go to another server either

MrEpicX 1 Posted January 16, 2014 you could just make it so you can only join a new server once every couple of hours or hour? that would certainly put people off. just put a warning when a person joins a server that says 'warning: you will not be able to join any other servers for an hour after joining.'more this. you shouldnt have to die to play with friends. its already hard enough to find people to play with lol plus with 4 hour cycling and such. youre going to get kicked if your timing is bad anyways. elf cakes 559 Posted January 16, 2014 join a server -> friend comes online and asks to play with you, but the server you are on is full -> can't go to another server eitherso you should take more time when deciding what server to play on. if your friend is coming on in half an hour then go to a medium populated server. also, how long do you normally have to wait for a player to leave a 40-man server? like 2 minutes?
McBonkhead 83 Posted January 16, 2014 pocket tardis :DIs that a tardis in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?  Oo, and add in that 30 second combat spawn timer that's coming soon and we are laughing eh.
Roshi (DayZ) 397 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) I like the idea OP - a more elegant variation on the one server, one character idea I mucked around with (http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/162584-should-you-only-have-one-character-per-server/) - while still an imperfect fix gets around some niggly problems that that idea produced.I'd rather deal with the problems this sort of approach generates than the rampant ghosting and server hopping that the current system has. gangrenetvp 74 Posted January 17, 2014 One issue would be if your usual server goes down, or if it is having a laggy night and you get sick of it and want to play somewhere else. What if each server you played on have a unique character?
