KOS - A Philosophical Discussion

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

There has been a lot of talk about how KOS is killing the game, and how there needs to be changes to the game to discourage / stop this behavior.

Unfortunately KOS is a real life reality that I imagine most people on this board have never experienced, and many have never even read about. The most large scale recent example of KOS is the Siege of Sarajevo, where a street was nicknamed sniper alley. In this street alone, snipers wounded 1030 people, and killed 225, of whom 60 were children. This was the indiscriminate killing of civilians by 'civilized' people in Europe.

There are many, many more examples of man's inhumanity toward man.

Kill on Sight is Human Nature

You may be thinking to yourselves "so what if it is human nature, they shouldn't be allowed to do this". That is the role of government in our society... The government has a monopoly on force (e.g. killing people). Asking for limitations / incentives not to kill on sight (beyond basic gameplay features already present) is like asking "Where is the government?" during the zompocalypse. Without laws and a government to enforce those laws, you will always need to ask yourself "Will this person kill me?" every time you meet someone.

So, what can you do about KOS? Do what humans have done for millenia, join a tribe (in this game called clans). The advantage of a tribe is that, when meeting another member of the tribe, you do not need to ask yourself "Will this person kill me?", because if they do, the tribe will punish the person. Whenever you meet someone else however, you still must ask yourself "Will this person kill me?".

I do agree that KOS can be very frustrating when your opponent saw you via 3PP / ghosted around your position / or server hopped to kill you. Unfortunately, that is reality for now.

To end on a happy note:

"There is only one way in which one can endure man's inhumanity to man and that is to try, in one's own life, to exemplify man's humanity to man." Alan Paton

Yet as shown off in my thread, people also complain about bandits that hold you up instead of KoSing. They're just whining, it's human nature, get over it.

Im only new on dayz, but all the posts about kos suggest to me that its decending into pure pvp, which isnt what i bought it for. As everybody gets more annoyed with kos, it will convert the middle ground over. Shame really...

Hory Shet

Stop complaining about KoS

and learn2play

I have had a character alive now for literally weeks.

he has been alive and kicking since the day after the first character wipe.

I have yet to die and have survived MULTIPLE firefights.

Stop running about like a macaroon, and get more sneaky. Scope out towns.

Only time KoS happens is when you let it happen. You see a guy and he is pointing his gun at you? then run. simple as that.

I once layed in the middle of Zelenogorsk and a team of 5 guys walked right past me, didn't even see me. It can be done.

I have no problem with KoS, per se. And your example from Real Life is case in point to it's 'Authenticity'. The problem comes, because unlike in RL, in game there is no mechanism for responsibility or repercussion from any action. This is what I find unbalancing. It means that a KoS player can simply run around and do what they want (good) but they can never be called on those actions.

Right, because you totally keep tabs of every name on this forum.  Certainly everyone who argued your points must be the ones complaining about KoS.  It is impossible that they are all different people with their own opinions just like yourself, right?  >.>

Hi.

I've been the victim of KOS twice in the standalone. Nothing to whine about there, was my own fault for letting them sneak up on me.

Regards.

3 fully geared people just killed me after "waving at me"

2 fresh spawns "waved at me", said hello, and then beat my head in with an axe

I can trust veterans....fresh spawns...I can't trust the gestures that people make. I can't trust Direct Chat messages......\

> I HAVE to kill all of you...on sight. Immediately.

Sorry 'bout it
